Backcountry Back pack White tail Bow Hunt

This thread is great! Anyone do this in the national forests in Vermont or New Hampshire?

I do it in VT. I haven't shot anything as you can't legally pack them out. They've got to come out whole. I see issues with that as I'd have to go up and down a bunch of screeish stuff full of hobblebush and then up 300 feet and down a very steep 800 for a total of a couple miles. It'd have to be actually big and not big for VT, and I'd have to call everyone I know to get it out. I do see a lot for hunting in VT. Basically I pack in before a snow storm and the orange tracking army. I take a tree sling. The deer are pretty used to being tracked and it's kind of a futile gesture in the area compared to say Maine based on behavior when I've done it. They just all are heading out away from the people coming in from all sides to get to where I'm at and it's kind of impossible to get them out from. If you're tracking and they realize it they just put the sneak on.

As of 2025 It is now officially legal to quarter and pack out deer in VT before check in, including the rifle season. So have at it.

I missed that. I don't even really hunt VT all that much even though I live here. If I want to actually get a deer I fly home. If I want to hunt New England deer I go to Maine or New Hampshire. Grouse I just go to Maine as it's not worth my time here. That's a game changer for me. Thanks! If you're curious, I'm prepping for baiting bears in Maine, and I drew an ND archery tag. I might have to focus on VT this November. Like I could get a deer here. Getting a deer out whole was a different thing.

They say VT has the worst hunting of any state. They also said the titanic was iceberg-proof. More for me!

For for years I’ve been wanting to kayak or canoe into some national forest lands in southern Indiana for deer. This thread is motivating me to actually do it!

Getting ready to do this style hunt for my first time for 2025 alternative firearm here in Arkansas. 4 days 3 nights is my goal and Caney Creek Wilderness area is my destination. From what I’ve learned without boots on the ground it’s some pretty rugged terrain. I’m headed down to do a day scout this weekend and hoping to pinpoint a good spike camp spot as well as a general direction to go hunt once I’ve packed in.

“Rugged” Is right, but it’s a beautiful area, and truly unique for Arkansas. I was going to go back there this year as well, but ended up drawing some tags for other opportunities that will eat up all my hunting time. I bet you’ll have a blast!
