I'm reading this while at the chiropractor for herniated and bulging disks with numbness in foot. All above say same thing core strength and stretching.

I have problems with it. Stretching helps a lot with mine. When I'm working out and stretching everyday it's not much of a problem but when I slack off stretching it comes back. Google stretches for it and see if that helps.

I can't stress this enough. Its the only thing that keeps my wife going.
Some gear changes helps too. It's the main reason we are rei members, otherwise couldn't afford the trial and error.

Definitely make sure its not something else.

A coworker has lived with it for 10 years. (Physical work, lifting, awkward positions). Some how it fell under workman's comp and surgery was highly pushed on him. He never had it done and is now better off than the best case post surgery scenario.

Proper diagnosis, and multiple opinions.

I've hurt my back 4 times in the last 5 years always lifting something and twisting.
The last time (2yrs ago) I had to crawl to my truck and my father helped me get in.
I now have pain that starts next my spine and run through my butt and around my leg. Sitting (or lifting something way to heavy) aggravates it the most. My doctor didn't want to do any imaging just said to be careful lifting stuff and that the test for a bulged disc was to shove a pin in my taint and see if it hurts...no thanks!
Anyways the only thing I have found that takes the pain away is exercise especially running on the treadmill and doing some weight lifting. If I slack off for a few days the pain will return.

Call me one that used chiropractic. It worked. It wasn't a one and done thing. I went twice a week for a few weeks. Then weaned off that to once a week. Then every other and so on and so forth. Now I go once every 5 or 6 weeks for maintenance. Find a chiropractor that adjusts you based on what your body tells them. My chiropractor is extremely gentle and I really enjoy going. It's not a quick recovery. Pay attention to how you sleep too. Im a side sleeper and I now sleep with a pillow between my leg. Don't sleep on your stomach. You have to have faith your body will heal itself. You just have to give it the tools to help. Fish oil fish oil fish oil for the inflammation. Magnesium helps too for the nerve.

Thanks everyone. I am very active and am outside working everyday. I work out 3 to 4 times a week but did pack out 4 different animals this year and put on many miles. My wife did the leg raise test that I have read is indicative of the herniated disc and I don't have any pain with that. I did look into piriformis syndrome and do have tenderness on the actual muscle but don't have any problems with stretching it. I know the muscle, if inflamed can compress the sciatic nerve. We live in the middle of nowhere without a lot of healthcare options, so just wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on exercises I can try in the meantime. Thanks so much for all of the posts so far.

Lots of great advice here on the subject. Stretching, exercise, and proper nutrition always a plus. Ive been a framer for over 20 years and dealt with every pain imaginable. There is a book out there called Pain Free by the author Peter Egoscue. Very interesting read and much of what he recommended worked for me.

I delt with that for close to ten years.I spent allot of time at the chiropractor and phys. therapy .Than out of desperation for some sort of activity I could tolerate I took an 11 mile bike ride.By the next morning my back didn't hurt for the first time in nearly a decade .That was 20 years ago I havent seen a chiro. or phys. therapist since than.Occasionally my back hurts but I get it under control with bike riding and /or crunches

Been doing tons of stretching and icing and relaxing. I have been getting up early and heading to gym, walking a mile then stretching and doing some light weights. Back is starting to feel better but going to take it easy for awhile still and continue to do stretching. Thanks for all the info guys and the advice. Its greatly appreciated.

I'm the oddity here, but surgery improved my life a great amount. I have ankylosing spondlitis anyway so that doesn't help but I have had back/leg pain for 17 years and got to the point I couldn't walk after doing pt, chiro, accupuncture, nerve blocks and steroid shots. I had a laminectomy and discectomy done on three levels and even right after surgery I was in better shape. Recovery is no joke but what really helped me before and now during my recovery is pool exercises. It' no impact muscle and cardio relief. Taking the compression off makes you feel so much lighter you can really feel the difference when you get out. Either way, good luck with it and keep as positive as you can.

Has anyone ever had sciatica nerve pain? I think it maybe started when I was packing out a mule deer this year. It has been on and off pain for two months. It starts at top of but check and moves closer to spine then down my leg. I went to chiropractor and that helped for a little bit but back again. I was told that's the worst as it does more damage if you have a pinched nerve causing disc to pinch it. Does anyone have any exercises or advise on this thing. Thanks

I have two herniated and two bulging discs in my lower back, I was medically discharged from the Army for it last year after I got hurt in a training accident. I have nerve damage in my right leg due to the Lumbar Radiculopathy and on occasion I have bouts of drop foot as well. I use a combination of stretching, hanging two times a day on my inversion table, aquatic therapy (swimming/hot tub/steam room) and every once in a blue moon I'll take some of my VA prescribed muscle relaxers and nerve meds if the pain is unbearable. I live in pain everyday, I rate it a 5-6 on a 10 scale and I have just simply learned to tune it out to the best of my abilities. I hate meds and I've seen far too often what happens to those that get hooked on them and I simply refuse to let myself become a victim as well. I am probably just delaying the inevitable, surgery, which Uncle Sam and now the VA, has been pushing for since day one, but I have been told by numerous doctors to delay surgery until you literally can't get out of bed anymore.

My best advice is to stretch and get an inversion table and use it religiously. The best relief I received from my pain was when I was doing traction three times a week while I was still in, unfortunately the VA won't cover that so the next best thing is the inversion table. Don't overdo anything, if you feel pain beyond the normal, even in the slightest, stop what you are doing. Also, it wouldn't hurt to get yourself a Tens Unit and use it for 15-20 minutes every evening. If you find relief from it then maybe wear it under your clothes during the day and run it for 20 minutes three times a day, I do this on occasion myself.

Not going to lie. I don't smoke pot but I can see why people with chronic pain would use it. It'd be better than getting hooked on pain killers.

Have you tried inversion therapy? It changed my life. back pain ruined me in my 40s...not so much an issue in my late 50s after going all Batman.

This is what I use twice daily. It is the closest thing to traction therapy you can get at home.

A drug is a drug is a drug............
But how the drug effects you......

Something that takes the edge off vs. Something that can mess your life up. Prescription pills are not good for a long period of time.
