Has anyone used these baby carrier backpacks? Last summer my son was small enough to go in a Bjorn when we went to flagstaff hiking in July and August. This year he will be 15-16 months old and he will not fit in a Bjorn. Any suggestions on brand or models?

Yup Kelly kid hauler works great, modified mine to work with my kifaru frame. The Kelly works fine with its standard suspension but my daughter is almost 4 and I just wanted more comfort.

Take a look at the dueter kid carrier I have one that I packed my 3 year old in hunting for about 5 miles, and the are rated up to 50 pounds, not cheap but comfortable and safe for the kids and you, I think mine is the kid carrier 3 or something like that. And it lasts very well on kid 2 and 6 nieces and nephews

I have been pretty happy with a Deuter Kid Comfort I got at REI. It is actually pretty comfortable on me & could handle my son at 25-30 pounds last summer. He's 37 now so I don't know how it will be, but at three he probably isn't going to tolerate being in it anyway.

This is one reason im inches from pulling the trigger on a duplex. Cargo chair + what ever size kid = comfortable for the whole fam. On kifarus forum there are a few reference pics of guys using it for such.

And its a great way to justify why I "need" one..

I have an Osprey Poco and really like it. Very comfortable for both the kid and myself. I've carried two of my boys all over in it, 2y/o and 3y/o. It had a lot of adjustment and fits both my wife and I. I'm 6'0" and she is 5'3". I'd buy another one. Wait, I'm going to as I now have 1 year old twins!

Another vote for kelty. Used a kid hauler for both of my kids. My youngest just turned three and is probably to the point that he's outgrown it. It's served us very we'll though. REI carries them and has them on sale periodically.

I've been using the Deuter kid comfort 2 since my daughter was little. It was the only one I could find at the time that was hydration compatable and I have been very happy with it. I told my wife when my son grows out of it I'm going to turn it into a meat hauler. She just gave me that look.

I just bought a kelty l.l.kids off a guy on kifaru forums a few weeks ago. My little guy is a year now and ~25lbs and still has plenty of growing room. Hands down my favorite baby purchase yet, I wish I'd have got one 6 months ago. My wife was totally embarrassed as I walked through Walmart with it on, that is until she saw all the other fathers tugging on their wives arms telling them they want one. :)

Last year my wife and I hike in 5 miles and +2000ft. elevation gain with her carrying our almost 3 year old daughter in a kelty kids carrier on her back and our 4 month old in an ergo carrier in front. I had all of our food, clothes, and gear for three nights- one of the heavier packs I've had to carry. I was really proud of my wife but we're definitely looking forward to when they are big enough to hike all the way in by themselves. The worst part was having to pack out all the wet diapers- those things just can't be burnt (I tried) :)

I had a Sherpani rumba pack and I really liked it. I packed my 40# daughter and 25# of gear (w/ large pod) and it was surprisingly comfortable. It was to have a baby carrier I could backpack with.

i use a kathmandu carrier that i pickup for $30 from a yard sale. works good.

i have also used the Mont bambino that i borrowed from a friend and i feel it's better than than the kathmandu but the price was right on the kath.
