Average cost of a Moose hunt

I priced mine out for next year and with all the airfare, three nights in a hotel, bush flights, tags, and cost of shipping all the meat back to NM is around $7,500. Bush flights are the most expensive part. It’s over half the cost of my trip.

I'm in Wyoming, on my way home right now from an Alberta moose hunt. Outfitter cost was $8,000 for a 6 day hunt. I had to drive from FL because they're out in the boonies and no way to freight meat home. So figure another 2K for fuel, motels and meals round trip.

BTW, my new chest freezer is coming home empty because the warm weather is keeping the rut activity very low. I had 2 opportunities at small meat bulls, but held out till the end for a 40"er. Saw some big bull elk, mulies whities, bears and 25 moose...just not a mature bull. Scenery was spectacular, food good and guides busted their asses. I had a blast!

A friend of mine went to the Yukon a couple years ago, the hunt itself was $26,000 plus airfare to Whitehorse and float plane from there. They donated the meat to locals and it cost him $1800 to get the cape and head back to the states.

Just got back from Alberta. Guide was $5500.00 plus 5% tax, tip $1,000, fuel $600.00, hotel 1 night $250.00 and meat processing $1,800.00. I am under 10k. Great hunt killed a 48.5" heavy paddled bull.

A 1X1 guided fly in hunt in northern Manitoba Canada will run about $15,000. You will be hunting from a boat so not really physical.

Seems expensive. My last one went about $100 for the tag, gas and freezer bags. It almost makes the 13 months of winter worth it.

Can you do a Moose hunt for $10k?

Yes. But you can’t be picky on the sub species or size. E. Canada or some Canadian sub species Moose hunts in western Canada can be done for under 10k. From ID, I’d look hard at Alberta, assuming you can’t draw one in ID. We are planning one in Alberta for 25 that will be guided and come in under 9k all in. We are driving, about 18 hours one way for us.

I think if you are from the lower 48 and want a high likelyhood of success with decent trophy potential you are not likely to find it for less than $10k all in with flights, food, meat transport cost. The range is really fro there up to $25k as the transporter charging $20k is still not easy or cheap to get to his hub he flies out of. The reality is there are two primary things contributing to this cost, time/effort to locate good areas/strips/access and the time it takes to fly there. Ultimately if it is a 1.5 to 2 hour flight from a village to a spot, that costs a lot of money in flight time and double if you are successful.

If you have the time, knowledge and accumen to e-scout and plan locations. As well as the time, persistence and patience to find a pilot(who you trust with your life), you can make an excellent trip happen for sub $10k. If you do not have all of those things, find someone who does and ve prepared to pay a premium for their knowledge and effort.

You can save some bucks by doing the following:

1. Hunting in the Canadian province closest to your house. Savings might be $800-2000
2. Finding a ranch hunt or pickup hunt where the guy isn't flying you in.
3. Driving to Alaska and hunting out of your own truck. in Central Eastern Alaska on the road system. The cost of hauling your own gear and truck and time off, may not pay dividends to someone who has no time off and doesn't have the gear.

Lowest thresholds of success are going to be the same as above.
1. Anything super close to the border and super accessible on Canadian public land will have resident pressure. Trophy quality and success will suffer.
2. Any road hunt will be just that.
3. Any Alaska road hunt could be a very expensive 2 week adventure where you don't see much wildlife.

Having driven the ALCAN several times to me this is a wonderful option. But you have to be able to make it work. If you had a pickup camper, and you lived in the western half of the USA.

AAA Road trip calculator is telling me $1400 for fuel. $2000 for groceries. $1515 for tags (black bear, moose, 1 wolf, and a hunting and fishing license for a week. I am adding the black bear tag for $450 which is high, but you might see a wolverine and you could take that on your bear tag. As in Alaska you can use a more expensive tag for a cheaper one or you could for most of the time I lived there.

58 hours from Phoenix to Fairbanks. I am using Phoenix as it is far enough south to encompass most of the western 3rd of the USA in drive time.

I generally do two or 3 12-14 hour days and then back off and do an 6 hour day and play a bit. Would take me 5-6 days to get there and get back. So that's 10 days. Plus 10 days hunting. 20 days. I don't drive at night, even though you have the roads to yourself from Edmonton to anywhere in Alaska.

In Newfoundland right now, 6250 for me and my non-hunting wife. Have to add in gas for 20something hr drive from NY and ferry crossing. Shot a spike bull yesterday. Only one guy out of 4 hasn’t killed one yet and he’s passed up a few.

Just got back from a caribou hunt in the Yukon with a resident. I couldn't believe how cheap it was for the tag and license, then you only charge me a harvest fee if I shoot something.

I think my Canadian non-resident caribou cost me less than $200 in tags/license/fees. Crazy! The $2.50/L gas made up for it though!!! The Yukon is wicked country, I hope to be back to hunt again!
