I'm not the best person to judge, as I'm sure I've crossed a line plenty of times. The post about Islam and scriptures seemed, to me, to have veered off topic and seems inconsistent with the rule that says "Don't post anything that could be considered hateful or mean-spirited, or intolerant of a person's race, culture, appearance, gender, sexual preference, religion or age." I could probably find some Biblical verses, especially from the Old Testament, that if taken out of context, might be just as inflammatory.

Imposing stricture gun control to me seems the central issue that can lead to meaningful and courteous discussion.

EDIT - and thanks for the tone and saying "sincere point" as there is too often much lost in translation here. And I don't care if someone wants to post broad point about an entire religion - I just don't think RS is the place for it.

Violence and war have been attributed to religon, only second most to capital gains, throughout history. Whether it be by the words in the scripture or the translation by people for their own purposes. What many people throughout history have done is given up their rights for security against threats. Only to leave themselves and others defenseless from the attacks they were afraid of. From the original post it seems like another radical on a watchlist wasnt being watched. Except by the people filming the consequences. Making more laws does not stop criminals or radicals. Only stopping criminals or radicals does.

Yeah primarily whitetails. Do I need to post on ethics or caliber arguments where my thoughts are clearly communicated by someone else or what? Our Constitution doesn't allow for discrimination based on religion, I imagine Australia's doesn't either. This point was not being pointed out. You or I can believe whatever we want about Islam but our Constitution is pretty clear. Making a law against a religion isn't gonna fly. Blaming a religion and our political pendulum in the US isn't exactly a great mixture either

I find the timing and crucial details of these mass shootings are often quite suspicious. We could derail this thread yet again down a rabbit hole of so called "conspiracy theories", but there are many eyebrow-raising details about these mass shootings that often go unanswered.

What they are guaranteed to do is stoke hatred between races, towards immigrants, towards other minority groups, as demonstrated in this thread and in the broader discourse in our country. They are also used to justify increases in surveillance, gun control, and generally the power of the police state. They are leveraged for manipulation, and it's up to you how much you want to play into that hand or not.

I know a lot of people that believe things like this are planned distractions. Planned by who is based on which group they distrust more. But usually pointed at some involvement by a government, or someone anti government. I always point out that why would someone struggle to plan and execute a plan that needs to perfect to work. Why not just foster distrust and take advantage of things that are happening around you. It would be much easier to let something happen and spin your narrative off of it.

Back after being banned. Accidently clicked on the rokslide tab on my phone and saw I was unbanned. Sorry mods if rules where breached. I've been a member for a long time but that's no excuse to not brush up on the rules every now and then. Bit confusing but anyway, an update...

The state of New South Wales (where the attack happened) convened an emergency sitting of state parliament to rush through new laws.
Basically new limit of 4 guns per licence holder, 10 guns for target shooters. There will be a sudden rush of hunters now having to become members of shooting clubs to be able to keep up to 10. Certain types of guns will be banned. Looks like straight pulls will go. Also you need to be a citizen to hold a licence. Permanent residents used to be able to hold a licence. I have a mate rushing to become a citizen now after moving from the UK 16 or 17 years ago.
The NSW premier actually called for the ban of "belt fed shotguns" after the younger attacker wore an ammo belt around his waist. Yes, that is the level of firearm understanding that the people making laws about guns have.
Gun licences will have to be renewed every 2 years. Right to appeal decisions has also been removed. It's very ironic that the very people they think are bad (gun owners) are the very people that will now rush around to jump through more hoops to obey more laws.

Not sure what the fallout will be for other states yet. I'm in Queensland so will have to wait till next sitting of parliament to find out I guess.

Interestingly but not surprisingly, laws banning protests for up to 3 months after a terrorist event have been put in place. We already need to get a 'permit' to protest.
Yes, we need to ask the govt if we can get a permit to tell the govt we don't like something.
