Have been debating picking up the 31.5 new Mathews, I shoot a 34 Defiant now. Does anyone think the Mathews may hold better? Not sure what the difference is between axle length vs riser length for stability?

The longer the ATA the more forgiving/stable. Takes more force to torque a longer object, simple physics. There are other factors that play in but a longer bow will always be more stable.

Unless you a lot of target or long distance shooting I doubt you're going to see a big difference from the "stability" aspect. The biggest thing you'll probably see it the difference in string angle, and the long your draw length the more noticeable it is.

I would guess that both of those bows are going to hold relatively similar. the mathews has the longer riser and the hoyt has a better string angle. As to your question on riser length vs ata, MOST of the time the two work hand and hand the longer the ata typically the longer riser. stability comes from a longer riser as thats where most the mass weight is coming from. Ata is going to have more of an effect on string angle. because mathews has pie plate sized cams on them your string angle is normally a bit better on them compared to bows with a similar ata.

The riser on the Defiant 34 is a long riser in its own right. I have a Pro Defiant 34 and the riser is longer than my Traverse riser by a little so it's probably around the same length as the VXR. Both bows have past parallel limbs also.

I'm not one to talk people out of buying new bows because I like new bows as much as the next guy but I don't think you will be gaining a whole lot by switching.

Really that's interesting, I was trying to find the riser length of the Defiant and was unable to.

I measured my riser today. 30" on the nose from pivot point to pivot point which is the exact some length as the VXR.
