Which industrial are you running? I have a sailrite and really like it. It's a bit hard to sew the super light stuff with but other than that I really enjoy it.

Sailrite as well! I broke down and bought the fabricator. I kept my bernina for the light stuff. It fits a nice niche and sees the xpac and other laminated stuff incredibly well. I’m partial to that machine because I learned on it…will probably replace it with a juki someday. But for now it does what I need. I kind of wish I had gotten an industrial juki that has the power the sailrite has but also has the zigzag stitch option…would have been handy for that neoprene project if I wanted to mate two pieces together…anyways, I’m super happy with the sailrite so far. Going to start doing some canvas and leather bags. Excited for the doors this machine has opened for me.

So I went from sewing Ripstop material.. directly to sewing canvas strap to heavy Cordura. The ONLY thing that I changed was my thread type. Other than that the Janome HD3000 automatically adjusted the tension.

Before I bought this machine I did a ton of research & used several other machines. In the end I did not go with a full blow industrial machine because of the overall lack of features. One of the key features that I found lacking in real heavy duty industrial machines was the lack of a stitch designed to sew stretchy material like neoprene.

Initally I thought going with this machine (the Janome HD3000) was truly going to be a comprimise between an industrial machine and a commerical machine. And the industrial machines are so much more expensive. What I have found is that this machine handles every project I throw at it regardless of the material type. Even the Cordura projects don't seem to bog the machine down.

I don’t see any issue with most domestic machines sewing simple cordura designs…I would be more interested in how your Janome does sewing box Xs or bar tacks on webbing over the top of layered cordura. I’ve had issues with my machine bogging down or breaking needles trying to punch through too much. Which is what originally steered me towards an industrial. I also really liked the idea of the industrial walking foot for a number of reasons.

Have you tried sewing canvas or leather with that machine? I see it’s marketed to have the capability. For the price point it’s definitely peaked my interest. Someday I’ll burn up this bernina and I’d be glad to have a new suitor lined up.

I haven’t tried anything delicate yet. I quite literally just got it setup this past week and the neoprene was my first project.

I’ll probably try using my Mara 70 or TERA 80 that I have sitting here that I use in my bernina 230, if I ever use it in the sailrite. But I honestly may just have the bernina setup for the delicate stuff and the sailrite for thicker stuff.

I do have a couple quilts to make in the next week or so, and I may try setting up the sailrite for that…if I do, I’ll definitely give you feedback.

Things have been pretty slow at my casa with the recent birth of my second son. But slowly finding a groove to set aside time to bang out projects again.

Made another synthetic quilt and did some jacket repair. Ripped out the old zipper and installed a new one as well as patched a number of holes with a variety of methods. Used grosgrain patches near the zipper, a zigzag stitch of thread in one spot and a cordura patch on the back in another. And finally, NOSO heat activated patches on the sleeve. This Patagonia got new life breathed into it, so it got a new logo patch too. out the door for another 20 years of service (hopefully).

The same repeat customer and avid Rokslider had himself a spotting scope cover built for his Leika. It’s no 88mm Kowa, but it’ll do.

Velcro swatches sewed on for stashing objective and eyepiece covers, per his request.

How do you come up with a pattern for the scope covers? Measure circumference and add seam allowance? Then trim away access to the rings?

Neoprene has good stretch to it so what I do is trace it out of painters paper (like you’d cover a floor with). I have a giant roll of it. And then I figure out where my seams are going to be etc and cut out my pieces. Then I mirror them and add seam allowance…if that makes sense.

This was my second one so I kind of eyeballed the 88mm pattern and sized it down and freehanded it. Got lucky, and nailed it. Better to be lucky than good!

So I recently went Oryx hunting and I kept throwing my Really Right Stuff Tripod in the back of the pickup. A light went off in my head... my tripod is worth more than the truck I am hunting out of, and it's only a matter of time that those legs get banged up. So when I got home I sewed up some neoprene leg protectors. Probably should have done it before the hunt - but luckily they sustained no damange while hunting.

Cordura Stuff sacks.

I made these with the design to use them as my food bags. I wanted them built with the ability to attach them up high in my pack to keep the weight of my food centered, close to my back, and out of the bottom of my pack.

Originally I didn’t make them with boxed corners(3D cube like). But found I could get more volume out of the same amount of fabric by boxing the corners. So that’s the way that cookie crumbled. Pretty excited how they turned out.

The large one fits 7 days of food and coffee/electrolyte mix. The small is more like 3-5 days of food.

I repackage all my food so for someone who doesn’t I doubt they’d get the same, but for my use it should be the .

Custom Gun scabbard for a folding chassis rifle. Personally not my favorite project, because I learned a lot and stumbled along the way. The customer wanted to have the rifle folded in the case so it became a little short stubby thing. But it should be plenty durable to last him a good long while strapped to a horse beating brush. Brushed no-pill micro fleece for the interior. 1/8” EVA closed cell foam padding. And 1000D cordura exterior. Daisy chain for lashing to whatever necessary and another mounting loop down near the muzzle.

This was a tricky project, figuring out how to best stitch zippers with the 1/8” padding between the lining and exterior material. But with new projects comes growth. Probably pump out a few padded gun and bow cases now that I’ve got some process figured out. Growing pains suck, but are necessary. Always learning.

I think if I were to make one for that application, I might force myself to learn how to sew a zipper placket to protect the zipper coil from said horse and brush. Yes! The real trouble I had was executing the zipper to my liking. I typically like to stitch right side to right side with the zipper and then fold back over and topstitch. With the 1/8” foam interfacing I had to alter that process slightly. Definitely lost some material stumbling through that to get a product I was happy with.

But in a long winded answer. Yes I stitched all three panels and bound individually and then stitched the binded edges together. I would have liked to have all the edges flipped and topstitched so you wouldn’t see the bound edges, but there’s simply way too much bulk there for it to be realistic.

I’ve been on a hiatus for a little while. Dadding pretty hard and finding other things to do instead of sew, like bait bears, organize and run local softball League and tournaments yada yada yada. Anyways, a fellow slider, requested a bag.

The idea is to mimic the Sherman from kifaru, kind of. But be more minimalistic, yet intent with its functions. It’s like a guide lid/Sherman mash up, essentially.

It attaches like all other kifaru pockets, with triglides. Has two loops at the 1/2 way point on the sides to attach compression strap side release buckles, if the situation arises. The back panel, houses two shoulder straps that can be deployed through the bottom triglides and you’re final approach bag is ready to roll.

This is mock up #2, made from black xpac. The final product will be made from one of the challenge sailcloth options. All seams on the final design will be taped.

Yes. Heat activated tape. Got it off of Amazon. Worked really well. Just get it hot enough.
