Arrow weight question for elk?

Was shooting a 480 grain arrow out of a bowtech sr6 28.5 inch draw 72 pounds. I took the 50 grain brass insert out and back to the regular hit insert. Now im at 450 grains. I thought I would benefit a little more from the flatter trajectory over the little bit of difference in momentum on the 30 grain swing. Now I'm second guessing myself. Am I still ok at 450 you think or should I go back to the 50 grains of brass?

Depends on your tune but I’d go heavier and non mechanical

Not sure, easton axis 300 w 100 grain head. 28.5 inch arrow

My Easton axis 340 is at 420gn, and a black hornet ser-razor had no problem passing through my bull at 42 yds. You will be fine w a COC head.

Depends...with 450 your momentum holds up to 55 lb-sec out to 30yrds. 55 is what’s recommended for a bull on impact. 480 holds out to 55 at 70yrds.

Not that 450 won’t do it past 30 but if both are flying excellent the decision is clear.

Have killed lots of elk with a 400 gr arrow. Have killed elk with a 435 gr arrow. Have killed elk with a 450 gr arrow.

Whatever shoots best and groups best out of your bow. Both of those setups are fine for elk. Pick the one you feel most confident in shooting and where it will hit.

The bull I killed couldn't tell the difference between 500 grains and the 417 grain arrow that went through him at 43 yards. Went 60 feet and tipped over. Put the arrow in the right spot you will be fine.

Thanks for the input. Shot a couple of times . Maybe and 2 inch drop diff at 40. Back to the brass I go.

This will answer your question;

Shoot the lighter arrow and the existing 480 arrow at 30,40 yds with your sight set for the 480 gr arrow. This overlays the real world trajectory better than any chart.

What you will find is a bit shocking to the calculator guys.....

The differnce is insignificant....almost not even noticeable.

I would scrap the 30 gr insert and go with a 125 gr instead of a 100 gr broadhead.

Anything that makes me feel more confident about my setup I’m all about. Even if it may be insignificant. Perfect arrow flight is #1. That with 100% mental confidence is everything.

Exactly. My last bull was caked in mud, and I got complete pass thru from a 420 grain arrow, 28.5 inch draw, 60 # compound bow. Only thing I know about “inserts” is you remove field point, “insert” 100 grain fixed broadhead, and go hunt.
