Arrow weight question for elk?

Exactly. My last bull was caked in mud, and I got complete pass thru from a 420 grain arrow, 28.5 inch draw, 60 # compound bow. Only thing I know about “inserts” is you remove field point, “insert” 100 grain fixed broadhead, and go hunt.

How far was the shot?

I buried one to the fletching last year at 36 yards....360 grains, rage trypan. Now I shoot 450 grains just to be safe.
