just for fun. post your current hunting rigs arrow weight and speed.

512 gr @ 259 fps

I am happy with how these arrows shoot currently but I am going to build a 25 gr lighter setup to compare. hoping to get into the 270s

It's usually around 30 grs for 10 fps, or 3gr per fps. It changes with different bows, also on how heavy the arrow is, but an arrow that's 5gpp to 8gpp is going to track around that if it's coming from a 27.5-30" draw bow that's in the 55-75# range.

I don't know what I'll be shooting next year for a hunting setup, it will be minimum of 280 fps, probably 288-295.

VXR 31.5 at 70#, 29", 80%
500 gr @ 280 fps

I'd guess you'll hit 266 fps if you shave off 25 gr. To estimate speed at any given arrow weight, you can calculate KE at a known weight/speed combo, assume KE remains constant (which it very nearly does), then recalculate speed at a different arrow weight:
  1. KE at known weight/speed: KE in ft-lbs = Arrow Weight in gr × (Arrow Speed in fps)² ÷ 450,380 = 512 gr × (259 fps)² ÷ 450,380 = 76.3 ft-lbs
  2. Solve for speed at a different arrow weight: Arrow Speed in fps = SQRT(450,380 × KE in ft-lbs ÷ Arrow Weight in gr) = SQRT(450,380 × 76.3 ft-lbs ÷ 487 gr) = 266 fps

i’m still working up my hunt set up this year. It’s probably going to be one of these 2. One is about 50 pounds the other about 55. I wanted to end up at about 52#, 480-500g arrow… but with trad shooting you kind of get what you get when you bareshaft tune….. I have not bothered to chronograph them.

505gr @ 278fps, I just dropped 15gr and am figuring 282ish? Haven’t shot them through the chrono yet. RX4, 72lbs @ 28” draw

OP you will most likely need to get down to 475gr or less to be in the 270’s. Some bows are more efficient with heavier arrows so you may need to go slightly lower.

294 FPS @ 445 grains. 3 pass throughs with small sharp fixed at this weight, one frontal on an elk. 2 shots same bull this past year Sevr 1.5 neither pass throughs.

Element Storm 300, 75 grain Nexxus Ti, 100 head, Easton Diamond 280 with GTO nock. Only thing I'd change is the nock.

508 grains, 264 FPS. Considering going to a 3 fletch which will get me to 500 grains and bump my speed a little.

V3X 29 @ 29 inches 78# 546 grains 283 fps VXR 28 @ 29 inches 78# 546 grains 279 fps V3 31 74# @ 29 inches 546 grains 270 fps at least on my chrono with a light kit.. of my Mathews bows the VXR 28 is my favorite.

508gr GT 300 going 284 fps from 69# at 29" Bowtech Realm. Working on using the same arrow from a Bowtech Solution at 71# and 29".
