Does anyone have any experience with arken optics? I'm running a Zeiss v4 on my 300 prc, but now that I've got my 30-06 shooting good enough to use it as my deer/light weight rifle I'd to put something on it besides the 3-9x30 thats on it now.

I have an arken scope. I have the EP-4. I do not recommend it for hunting. The cross hairs are so thin when zoomed all the way out. The new models may be different, but they are awesome for long range rifle shooting. My scope is the 6x24 one I believe. It is a pretty heavy scope. The new models may be better though and I know the new models hair illuminated crosshairs. I can video the crosshairs for you so you can see what they are like. Just let me know. They are amazing scopes though just fyi. Probably my most favorite scope.

Let me see if I understand whatever point you are trying to make... you see no benefit to having a lightweight rifle that would enable you to put a heavier scope on it in order to give you the advantages of that optic while still maintaining a lower overall weight for the package?

This concept is inconceivable to you?

I understand my original thought was not explained well.

I have 12lb rifle chambered in 300 prc that is my "canyon rifle" or whatever you want to dub it. I have a few hunts coming up this year that I won't need the rifles full potential.

My grandfather gifted me a remington 700 chambered in 30-06 when I turned 16. ( he bought that rifle and a lifetime license for me the day I was born ) I've struggled to get this rifle to shoot much better than 1-1.25 moa at best, recently after finally getting around to trying some 168gr bergers this rifle is now performing to my standards for a factory rifle. 3 shots under .75 moa and 5 under 1 moa.

This rifle currently weighs a little over 8lbs with a lesser quality scope on it that does not track well.

Arken prides themselves on their tracking and their products are relatively affordable. Me not trying to spend much more than what the arken cost figured it would be a good fit and would only raise the rifle weight by 10oz which quite honestly only makes the rifle easier to shoot.

I apologize for being to brief in the first post.

What is your scope budget?

I personally would stay away from Arken on a big game rifle I intend to pack, lots of better options. I do however have a couple SH4 Gen 2’s on heavy varmint rifles and they fit that bill nicely.

You can get a Sightron STAC 3-16x42 or 4-20x50 in FFP for $450 or less. Optically the Arken may have nicer glass. Not really sure but the STACs are good tough scopes that wont break the bank. They track well and have great turrets for the price. Right around 24oz and better eye relief than the Arken also.

Like most though you are gunna be dealing with a thin reticle until you crank up the magnification. They offer a SFP with a duplex for quite a bit less also. Cameraland has them on sale for $300-$350 and the FFP models for $430-$450ish

In that price range I would look at a vortex hs-t or hslr 4-16x44. If you look hard you can find them used for $350-$400. I have probably owned close to 20 of those scopes, currently have 2 of them, and i have never had a problem with them. They are relatively lightweight, Track well and have never worried about buying used with the warranty.

What experiences have you had to lead you to this conclusion?

There was nothing wrong with your original post. I was responding to the other dude who seemed to think it was a crazy idea to put a heavy scope on a light rifle.

I've been hesitant to reply to this thread because I've only had my Arken for a couple of months and have only had it out to the range. I won this scope in a raffle as part of a rifle package. I had never heard of Arken before honestly. I have Sigs and SWFA's on my other scopes.

I can tell you that so far I have been very impressed with this scope. The build quality of this scope seems to be very high. It also has held zero and tracks very accurately in my limited testing (I haven't done any drop tests on it, but I've been pretty rough on it).

Personally I really like the reticle. Mine is an FFP scope so yes, it is a very thin reticle at the lowest power level....it's PERFECT at full zoom. That said, I've been playing around with it at lowest magnification and I can easily see the reticle and get it on target for deer very easily, even in low light (I have a herd of deer in my backyard every morning so I've been testing this). Mine also has the illuminated reticle and when you pop that on the cross hair is VERY easy to see at every mag level.

You're going to get a ton of guys here with no experience with Arken telling you to go with x, y, z, scopes. I'm unfortunately not ready to give a total thumbs up because I don't have enough time on this scope, and no hunting experience, but I will tell you that I'm taking this scope out for Spring bear this season as, so far at least, I've seen no negatives about this scope.. So f

Does that including mounting hardware you will need to hold that Goliath? Cameralands deal on the 4-20x50 duplex or MOA-2 is $350 with a set of Athlon Precision rings or $310 with a set of cheap Nikon rings. I would not call the Athlon Precision rings top end either but they are upto the task. I would also have reservations about the MOA-2 reticle for a hunting option. Its quite thin.

My rifles are farily hard kicking MLs so good bases/rail with good rings are a must. Those dont come cheap. I got close to $300 in a set of rings and Murphy rail. You start putting a 2lb+ scope on a lighter rifle and its gunna need good mounting hardware even if recoil is only moderate. You wont have as much rifle weight sucking up some of that recoil. Granted my MLs kick quite a bit more than a 30-06 when im shooting upper end loads.

It's a good point, but also bear in mind it is a 34mm tube so there is more surface area for your hardware to grab onto than most scopes out there. I'm using the rings that came from Arken on mine and I've put about 100 rounds through it and my scope has not moved at all. That said, it's sitting on top of a 6.5 CM. It might be interesting to throw it on top of my 300WM to see how it fairs, but I'm too lazy for that.

I also look at:

1) How long has a company been around?...Sightron (Kenko) has been around for ages and they make their scopes. They are not outsourced to child labor camps in China or even Asia Optical (Scopro). While im no fan of Chinese glass the Athlon Midas TAC has been around a fair amount of time. It has a good track record but its also over $600 now. You wont find them for $450 anymore....Really love everything else about that scope though.

2) Eye relief....3.1-3.4 is a little tight but not horrible. Probably ok on most 30-06 rifles?

3) What else is out there that isnt made in China. Well, Natchez has sales on the Veracity in 3-15x50 FFP for around $450 and thats a bargain for that scope. No light weight but a good value for the coin. Those days might be gone but maybe not.

4) Mounting area available. How much room is between the bells and turrets. Do you have enough room to get the relief set comfortably? Thats part of the reason i bought 2 Murphy rails. 2 piece bases were not gunna do it for me. You can surely buy a fairly good rail for less than half of what a Murphy cost but most are 6061 or 7075. EGW and Hankins have some in steel for under $100. Neither offered a rail for my application though except in extruded 6061.

That mostly sums up why i mentioned the STAC line. It covers all the bases but its also not without its flaws. Packing a 3-16x42 or 4-20x50 FFP scope into a sub $500 package not made in China has to cut some corners but you know you got a solid company behind your investment. Ive got a 3-16x42 and 4-20x50 in duplex SFP. Im happy with them for what i paid, especially the 4-20 from Cameraland. I may get another in MOA-2 just for recreational shooting.

My main complaint is the windage cap is pretty stinking big. That might be an issue on some centerfires. Its not a huge issue in my application.

I'll be putting a rail on it, ill probably go with nightforce or arken rings if I decide to go that route. Really just wanting a scope that will dial reliably, this rifle I really want for 500 and in. I know the rifle is capable of further ( confirmed threw drop verification ) but I just want something that doesn't weigh 12lbs when I'm more than likely only going to be take shots at max 200-300 yard range but may have to occasionally take something out to 500. The arken is definitely overkill for this particular application but eventually when the funds are there I'll build a 6.5 prc that will replace the heirloom.

Take a look at the Hankins Precision Gun Parts picatinny rail. He makes a nice stainless steel and 7075 rail that is far from crazy expensive. I think the EGW HD rails in 7075 are about the same price also but the steel rails are much more. Might as well get a Murphy if spending that much.
