Lucky SOB!OMG, of all the tags I applied for that was by far the longest shot and toughest draw odds. 10 total tags in that unit. 1 for nonresident. Me. LOL. Only 4 points. My kids had chip shot odds with their points and youth tags….apparently not. Thx. I’ve never been so disappointed with a pronghorn tag
I feel your pain and I’m a resident. No tag for me once again. I hate AZ in this regard.
I've got one better than this. There are guys in AZ that think the elk in their state are Roosevelt elk. I was completely mindblown when one of them wanted to argue with me about it before. If they think there are Roosevelt elk in AZ, then good luck explaining how AZ's draw system works LOLVery much agree. I've lived in both AZ and CO and met countless people in both states that have applied for their whole lives that didn't understand their home state. AZ guys that had no idea the different between first and second choices (or were applying backward for no apparent reason). Met an outfitter in CO that was convinced that since their clientele was mostly non-resident, that the state was giving out more tags to non-residents than residents.
I try to remind myself that most people are dedicated to other things and have more constraints on their time than people like us, but you'd think they'd would want to know the rules before they enter the lottery. Then again what percentage of people know the basic strategy for craps or blackjack before playing at a casino? Anecdotally I'd say a much smaller percentage than I would expect.
I did meet a guy at my work that claimed that, said it's why they were bigger antlered...pretty strange. What I've heard more often is that they're actually Merriam's elk, in fact I've even heard that claim thrown out by some big names in the industry. There's a cool thread on AZ elk history on CWT, for those interested. Really cool stuff.I've got one better than this. There are guys in AZ that think the elk in their state are Roosevelt elk. Does AZGFD publish stats on the total number of in state versus out of state applications submitted versus out of state and resident tags drawn? I'm still relatively new to Elk hunting in Arizona (8 years, 2 tags, no elk).I feel your pain and I’m a resident.
No elk tag again for me. No pronghorn tag either (never have drawn).
Thankfully there’s OTC bear and lion to keep me out there.

Seeing results in a matter of minutes/hours is generally not the case. AZ always hits credit cards first and then it can take a couple weeks for the portal to have results posted. Usually about 2 weeks. If your card was hit for the cost of a bison tag, you drew a bison tag… unless AZGFD screwed up and incorrectly charged you and that’s been known to happen a time or two.How long does it take the AZ G&F account to no longer say pending? I got a pending charge to my CC last Tuesday for the amount of a Bison tag, non-res fee at that. I about had a heart attack! Now the charge has posted but the G&F account is still pending. Any insight on this? I’ve had an elk tag there before and it was a matter of minutes or hours and I saw what I drew on my G&F account.
I thought it was within the same day that I saw the results but I certainly could be mistaken. I know I’m not mistaking the charge for the bison tag! Tough to miss that one haha. I’ll try to be patient and see what I drew. Thank you!Seeing results in a matter of minutes/hours is generally not the case. Prepare for long walks and lots of miles looking for them! Good luckWell it is official - I drew the AZ Bison tag! If anyone has any guidance or former experiences on the Kaibab bison hunt I would appreciate it.
