12 years ago I took an oilfield job working 2 on, 2 off. Had several 2bed 2bath plus loft condo picked out in Big Sky right in mountain village. Planned to live there on my two off. The condos averaged around $200k and I planned to close after my first few hitches. Well, the day I took that job happened to be the day I met my wife. Things change and no regrets, but I could basically be retired and living comfortably off the rental income of that place today.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for but ..

Mount shasta, CA.

I know it's in Cali, but there are a lot of affordable homes in the area. Lots of places along the river or in the mountains. There is also a lake there, fairly small.

Ski resort is okay. I think they have 3 lifts, maybe 4.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for in terrain. Just want to ski a few runs, plenty of small places fit the bill. Are you an expert skier and want/need big mountain terrain, steep couloirs, cliffs and steep sustained pitches, then no, there is no place that isn’t overpriced and overrun. But if you truly crave skiing, then that’s the price you (we) pay. Backcountry is great, but it’s the new flyfishing. Everyone is doing it.

LOL. Don't be so dramatic. A list of all ski resorts in the US is easily found....I was just asking for which ones would be recommended. Show me where a list of "specific places" to kill a big bull can be so easily found.....and please send in a PM

For-profit ski areas exist for the purpose of bringing in skiing customers. At this point the money is in amenities and real estate, and many of the major ski areas are all owned by the same couple mega-corporations, so the entire ski area business model is aimed squarely at becoming exactly what you dont want—a year-round wally-world resort. The independent resorts are dropping like flies. And, you have no control over what happens to your local resort, so I think choosing location based on what is there now has a short lifespan until it’s become what you are trying to avoid. If its skiing you are after your money is better spent on your own hill. Add rope tow (or climbing skins), stir and serve. Add lights and you can entertain your wifes friends. If you dont want that your only hope is to find a small, non-destination local ski area that is owned as a cooperative so it doesnt get bought up by one of the big resort mgt companies when the owner retires and their kids dont want to run a ski area.

Over the last 30 years, all the ski towns I am familiar with out West have been overrun by 2nd homes of the rich and liberal, and no longer hold the quaint charm they once did. Looking to put roots down and maybe buy some land near a place that hasnt been ruined yet. I used to think Whitefish, MT was that place, but it's been overrun as well. Open to Alaska as well.

I have a beautiful property at lake greenwood SC I would sell. No damn snow most of the time either! And no hills on it!! Lots of deer too. 14.55 acres in a high end subdivision. 200k. Boat ramp, boat storage and community dock. Gas, water and sewer. Beats colorado front range BS.

Alaska has the same problems as anywhere else. The town of girdwood is not affordable for most and those that live there have their pie and don't want any development to happen. I think i paid 17.00 for a twix bar and a lemonade last year. Could definitely be worse though, parking is still free.

You should be charged at least that much for ordering a Twix and a Lemonade. That’s a super grody combo man!
