I will be muzzleloading elk in Colorado this year and would like to take my Ruger SR22 pistol for grouse. I see .22 rimfire are legal but not sure if .22 pistols are. Any info would be appreciated.

^ what he said. It's a Colorado thing I suppose, but also the item most stumbled over when the game warden shows up. So many folks forget to do it or don't know to do it, I figured it would be helpful to mention here.

We do the HIP here in KY also. I have read that its a federal program, so I am heading out to Colorado for the 1st Rifle season. Is the KY HIP number I have good for Colorado? I will need to go online and purchase my small game license so I guess I will find out.

I never understood the HIP thing. You bought a license, all your contact info is associated with that license. Why do you need to call in to say you're going to go hunt with your hunting license??

Question. Does my NR CO Elk-Fishing license allow me to hunt small game?

No, you need a NR small game license, available annually ($56) or daily ($11 for the first day, $5 each additional).

Coyotes are the exception, "YOU CAN HUNT COYOTES without a small-game license during big-game seasons if
you have an unfilled big-game license for the same season and unit. You must
use the same method of take for coyotes as your big-game license allows. Once
the big-game license has been filled, hunters must purchase a small-game license
to continue hunting coyotes, and if using a rifle, it must be .23 caliber or smaller.
If you’re not hunting big game, a small-game license is required to hunt coyotes"

You'd probably want to call the CPW and ask about that one. For residents our independent combo licenses say "small game and fishing".

"4. TO HUNT AND TAKE SMALL GAME, you need a small-game license, a combination
small-game and fishing or a lifetime small-game and fishing license. Smallgame
hunters must register with HIP before their first hunt. See details about
the Harvest Information Program (HIP) below" taken from Page 2, here: http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/RulesRegs/Brochure/SmallGameWaterfowl.pdf

Signed in and it would let me buy one for $56 if I proceeded. Funny thing is I was told several times (by random strangers) that my Elk licence included it.
Thanks for the help and I think I'll pass for $56.
