This admission blew my mind. 730 yards and the dude admits he doesn’t range it before lobbing lead. Like WTAF?
I can’t remember now, did he originally range, then not re-range? The reason I ask is that my .777 bc bullet drops 123 inches at 730 yards. Zero chance you’re hitting it anywhere without some version of a range and dial. 10 feet of Kentucky windage just doesn’t work.

No one deserves a big buck for their first deer. By the way, here is my daughter's first buck. What a monster!

Uh oh, she's spoiled for life. Can't top that, might as well quit!

He's just trying to save this other lady from the same miserable fate!

No shortage of morons - both versions of the drama are doubtworthy. I'm mainly curious why this Easton guy didn't 'punch Von Dickweed in the throat and roll him around in the cactus? A girl and outdoor writer exchanging hail Marys at 600-1000 yards at a deer? The best possible outcome, aside from the public entertainment we've been given, would have been some coyotes finding the deer a few weeks later and claiming it as their own.

He likely ranged and dialed, probably on a different deer, or maybe the oak brush he knew the deer were in before the shooting started
Saw this buck and just sent one

IMO a reasonable interpretation of what he wrote is that the buck moved and wasn't where he had previously ranged and he didn't re-range and/or account correctly for the change in distance.

Also in his OutdoorLife Bio:
Aram von Benedikt is one of Outdoor Life’s western writers. He has no formal credentials as a writer, only the authenticism born of a life spent in the backcountry and a library of 3,000 books.

He didn't say there was an initial range. I suppose it could be implied that he had an initial range, but as the buck moved further away he failed to obtain a new range thereby making a low hit.

This lack of information, plus only AVB saw the Buck for the final 2 shots. Maybe she hit with 2, and it was lethal..? I read everything pretty quickly, but nobody else saw the buck before his final 2 shots. And how far were those 2 kill shots from? If he cant kill from 100 he better stop shooting from 400+ altogether..

Unclear, although he does state that he was “set up”, so you could come to the conclusion that set up included ranging the deer. But we don’t know what deer he was set up on or where the deer he shot in the leg was part of that group.

The only thing he says is this:
“The biggest buck was trotting sideways to me, then he stopped, quartered away, and I shot. I should have taken the time to range him, but I didn’t. My shot went low due to the additional distance and struck him in the right front leg.”

Being how he supposedly shot at a buck that wasn't collared , there is quite possibly another dead buck on that hill.

About 30 years ago, maybe a little longer, my dad and I used to hunt the high desert. I was too young to carry a gun. He had his 270 BAR. We’d ride horses with dogs in the sage until we jumped a big one. Then the rodeo would begin!

We’d jump off the horses, which would usually run like the ghost of satan was on their asses and he’d start shooting at the deer running as fast as a damn cheetah while being chased by 2 cow dogs barking on his heels. My job was to reload the magazines. They were 4 rounders if I remember correctly, and I’d reload them off his leather pouch on his belt, the ones that you could fit 20 rounds in. He’d stop shooting when they were out of sight, which usually was a long way away! 30 years ago the thought of ethics in that situation never crossed our minds. It sure was fun…up until it was time to go chase down the dirty nags that were usually about as far away as the buck!

I’d give a small fortune and a testicle to do that one more time…
Hands down the funniest thing I have read on RS. Probably because I could see every bit of that as I was reading it. Took me 3 times to get thru it, couldn't stop laughing.

Let me guess. That appaloosa was leading the charge. We had one and his nickname was "britches" because when you got on him you better have them on tight.

The part that I have a problem with is the red herrings he threw in his part of the story. The dude is a professional writer, he knows what those are and why they shouldnt be used. He intentionally put them in there to get peoples emotions running.

BINGO

Kinda like the butthurt dude who tried blasting Yeti a few years ago for "refusing to sell a cooler" to a banquet/fundraising event. Well, yeah Yeti did refuse because dude was trying to buy through a discontinued program and Yeti provided them with the proper program paperwork to purchase

What are you, some kind of stalker?! 😂.

Here’s the Appaloosa in question. My dads quarter horse used to lead the charge though.
