Applying as a big group draw odds in CO?

What are the odds of drawing an archery elk tag as a group of 7 in Colorado unit 71? Do your chances go down drastically with a group that size?

Your odds depend on how many pref points the lowest point holder in the group has.

Odds go off the lowest amount of PP, even if the main person had 30 and 1 guy in the group had 0 you’re going in with 0 points and if you draw you lose all your points.

Also if it’s a group of 7 and there’s 3 tags left you won’t draw . Has to be enough tags leftover to cover the amount of hunters.

Looks like the odds for that hunt were roughly 60% at your point level last year. With point creep I would guess that your odds will get worse. Id say there is a chance you could draw a party app with 7 people but I'm guessing your chances will be pretty low.

If I were you guys I'd do 3 different party apps, 2 groups of 2 and a group of 3. Hopefully one or two of your groups get drawn and then the guys that don't get drawn can come with still and just be the dedicated callers. Archery elk is a lot easier if you have someone behind you calling in a setup.

Best guess, bull tags around 50%, if cow tags around 25%

Have any of you hunted 71 before? If yes then I would stick with it.

If you haven't, there are several units that should be 100% draw with group of 7 for archery and I would start there.

Preference points is the main factor over group size I believe.

Odds were 60% last year, predictive show 29% this year. I wouldn’t worry about the group size there is an absolute ton of tags, the chances that you draw when there are less then 7 tags left are slim. There was 482 non-res tags last year. The group size (points are a different matter) only starts to come into play when tag numbers are low enough that you have a decent chance of overrunning the number of tags available and drawing dead.

This. Increase your chances to draw, plus your ability to get the group into the unit on consecutive years by learning to tolerate walking around the woods without a bow for a year, knowing that means you will next year. 7 guys all with tags is honestly just an insane number. Most of those are going to turn in to soup. go in with 3-4 tags this year, then the remainder go in with 1 point next year then on and on.
