Anyone use the ulmer edge on elk last year?

Looking at switching to the ulmers. been shooting the g5 montecs.

I did use the Ulmer edges on an elk hunt last year, and I can say they preformed flawlessly as I got great penetration on a mature ponderosa pine. (Very hard-to-draw tag here in NM).

The Ulmer edges flew very well out of my setup and I never had an issue tuning them, but for some reason I can't make myself shoot a mechanical when my slick tricks fly just as well. Just a quirk for me I guess.

Shot grizzly and black bears and a blacktail and whitetail deer. Great heads. The Ulmers fly perfectly and penetrate well. Stone sheep are up in a couple of weeks.

Seem like they are a good broadhead. I can't bring myself to use an expandable when my fixed blades fly just as good. Shooting shuttle t locks. They fly great to 120 yards (about the furthest I shoot.)

JD, if you can only get them to fly well out to 120 you've got a tuning issue. The obvious fix is to change to expandables to extend your range a bit. LOL

These heads are great in my opinion. I killed my bull with one last year along with an antelope and deer. My buddy and I both shot our bulls with these heads last year. Both piled up within 100 yards and nothing was wrong with the head after the shot.

Agreed. Got some new ones and will have to sharpen each and every blade... would barely hack through hair as they came. I don't see why it's so hard to get them sharp enough from the factory...

I don't either. Trophy Takers other broadheads aren't super sharp but way better than Ulmers from the factory.

How are you guys sharpening the blades? I've been using a lansky but cannot seem to get them as sharp as I would like?

Single bevel blade never feels that sharp.

Run non bevel side over a strop with oxide. Will knock the burr off, and get it as about sharp as its going to get

Aron, what setup are you shooting these days? arrow weight and poundage etc.

I wasn't impressed with penetration on a large whitetail and antelope. I'm switching back to fixed blade.

I put a hole in a mule deer earlier this week that a golf ball could pass thru without touching anything. I was pretty impressed with the ulmers getting pushed my fmj's

Ok I know what I said earlier on in this post, but after doing a lot of research and testing, I decided to give the ulmers another try with antelope this year instead of my slick tricks. The shot was at 25 yards and the buck went less than 40. The arrow blew through chest and was buried in the sand almost 20 yards behind the buck. The entrance and exit holes were absolutely massive, I could stick all 5 fingers in each. I will be using the Ulmer edges for deer and antelope from now on out. I was extremely impressed with the performance of these broad heads.
With that being said, I will still use a fixed blade for elk to get maximum penetration on a tougher skinned and larger bodied animal.
