Hopefully he gets his calls back too. someone should check that shop and see if they are selling some custom elk calls.

No elk calls on his page but there are a few skinning knives. I know Ryan mentioned that there were a couple knives missing too

The power of the internet is amazing! Good job guys. Hopefully if this is stolen it gets back to the rightful owner.

This would be great to see resolved.
The seller with that many transactions most likely is a pawn or consignment shop.

Listing is no longer active.

As to the question about bidding. Very common for people to bump bids. Happens all the time. If you follow a lot of things you will notice that two things happen commonly. A seller will have multiple items listed. If you go through their items the same bidder will keep bidding on all of them. If that bidder wins the auction you will get an email about a week later saying an item you were watching has been relisted.
Large ebay sellers partner together, generate multiple accounts and bid on each other's stuff to increase prices.

Very cool if he gets his pack back. Brings to mind something I've been thinking about in the past few weeks. How do you mark your pack so it can be returned to you? Part of me wants to write my info in sharpie on the inside but then I think if I change packs in a few years someone has to scribble that out. I've also considered sewing in a name tag that can be removed for a sale but help the honest folks get in touch. Even if a thief cuts the tag out the stitch lines will still be there and if I had photos to show what I'd done it could help police get it back to me. Heck I think even if you wrote in your own random serial number on the inside of the bag and took a photo a thief would have a hard time explaining how you knew what was written inside the bag and where... unless you were the rightful owner.

Any other ideas for marking these valuable packs?

Hoping that Ryan gets his pack, calls and knives back and that the pawn shop has paperwork that will lead to the dirtbag. I hate thieves.

It'd be nice to hear about something being recovered.

It sucks the pawn shop will loose in the end, depending how much they paid for it. Most likely the thief that stole it didn't know what he had, so I bet they sold it cheap. The owner gets his bag back, the thief gets a slap on the hand, and the pawnbroker loses money.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for the pawn shop. While they may be great people they are typically dealing with shady characters. I am pretty sure they know that often they are picking up hot items. Also....a quick internet search for pretty much anything that exists gives them an idea of what something is worth. Searching "Kifaru" and then finding out the guy only wants $50 for the pack lets the pawn shop know it is hot.

typically dealing with shady characters.

Depends on pawn shop really. I am a pawnbroker myself and the problem is the thieves are getting smarter or the IQ points are going up from 10. Items that are stolen usually get traded for drugs/traded/sold to someone else, so the person who sold it to the pawn shop probably didn't steal it. This year I have had a few stolen bikes come in to my store that were then picked up by police. I told myself "ok, I'm going to really start testing people on their knowledge of the bike they bring in". So a month ago this kid bring a bike in to my shop and at first I was like HMMM he looks suspicious to me. After talking to him and see if he really knew anything about the bike, he seemed fine. One hour after he left, cops came in for it.

As for loosing money on stolen stuff, it sucks. Its not that big of a deal to me, because I might see the cops 3-5 times a year. If a pawnshop is loosing big on stolen stuff, then yes that is shady, depends on location I guess.

Just because someone might ask $50 for the pack, doesn't mean its shady. It could have been a lady saying it was her husbands/grandpas and he past away (something like). Now again depending on pawnshop, if it seemed legit, I think I would have offered to pay more knowing it was worth way more then $50 (most likely it would have been taken home:)) If her story wasn't straight or didn't seem right, I would have sent her and the pack out the door.

Good points. I admit my point of view is skewed is I live in a rural area that is riddled with prescription drug abuse. Therefore the theft and selling on the cheap is all too common here. These guys know where to to go to sell. Not everyone will deal with these known thieves so I agree it isn't prudent to assume the pawn shop purchased the pack on the cheap.

I hope that if the pack is stolen the owner is reunited with it and that the thieves go to jail.

Ryan's post about his pack getting stolen out of his garage is exactly who I was thinking of when I posted this here, but I vaguely remembered the post and couldn't remember his name or where he was from. I didn't want to seem accusatory, but I'm glad word got to him and sincerely hope he's able to get it back. Maybe the shop has some of his other stuff too, and the pawn broker's records lead down the trail to prosecution of the shitbag that stole it.

Ryan tweeted back to me that the Boise PD has the pack and may have the thief as well, so he should be getting it and anything else the pawn shop may have of his soon I think. Nice work Rokslide.
