I'm wanting a short , light , hunting gun for under 100 yards. I have a suppressor rated up to .338, so would like to stay in the .30 or .338 cal. I have played around with the 300aac and wanting more. The 8.6 creed never really took off. I'm considering just getting a rem 700 action, a light weigh Grayboe stock and going down the road of a tax stamp. Anyone have a 338 federal? What length barrel ? Twist rate?

Done 300 blk subsonic for pigs and it is ok but really dependent on the bullet. Have a tikka in 338 federal but I have not cut it down or tried to go subsonic with it yet. Was holding off till I could find something that was designed to expand well. I know the guys at q are working with vendors on low velocity expanding bullets with high twist rates.
Discreet ballistics is making their low velocity rounds. Good stuff.

We've put a lot of bears in the freezer using 300 blackout subsonic from a 10.5" barrel with a suppresor. It's been surprisingly efficient at killing with 190gr Maker REX bullets. No complaints on the way it performs but boredom gets the best of me and has me looking hard at the 8.6. Plus, who doesn't like new guns and a reason to buy another suppressor. I'll get one for sure once factory brass comes out, when ever that might be. If that doesn't hurry up the 375 raptor might happen then.

A really fun brush gun would be the Christensen Modern Precision Pistol. I was looking at doing the .308 version which has a 12” barrel if I remember correctly. It would be hard to get a really good check weld with the pistol brace but I messed with it at the shop and for 100 yards and in, I would do it all day.
Also been debating the same. Trying to decide between the MPP and building my own in a pork sword chassis

The pork sword seems like a great option but it's pricey. If I'm going to drop that kind if money I'd rather spend it on a long range gun.

The 375 raptor looks promising but I don't want to buy another can just for it.
I'm definitely not ruling out another 300 aac. I have one with a 10.5 barrel but wanting a bolt gun to quiet it down some. Inhave hears great things from the makers.
A subsonic .308 is less than desired from what I have read. I could load up and few and try in my 10 twist rem700.
If i went with an 18" barrel on a .338 fed I could always elk, bear hunt with some 185s and get decent velocity. Duel purpose I suppose.
I have a buddy who's a good Smith. If he has the reamer I can have him put together me a bolt gun very reasonable. He's built me 2 338 edge, and a 6 slr. All sub 0.75 moa or less. I can't complain.

Well don't overlook the Encore. Rimfire to belted magnum, barrel changes don't require any tools beyond a punch, decently accurate, pretty light, and if you're throwing a tax stamp on you can also get wierd with it.
I have an Encore pistol with a brace and an SBR'd contender and they're among the most packable rifles in my safe. With a quick detach muzzle device on your can and a folding stock, you're looking at a rifle that tucks inside most rucks or can carry on a sling all day.
The 8.6 Creedmoor is on the way, if you're interested. Less guesswork than the .338 Federal. Over on silencertalk iw as following the .338 federal subsonic loads (250gr from a 1:7 twist barrel) but folks were talking about needing magnum primers in the brass, opening flash holes, and still fighting powders. The 8,6 whenever it runs out is looking at a faster twist, and with the cartridge design should be less issued with inconsistent ignition.
The other thing to look at would be some of the dedicated subsonic cartridges, your Whispers and the .338 Spectre. If you're comfortable outside the 30-.338 range you can go with one of the oldest subsonic thumpers in the market, a fast-twist 45-70.

I’d be really interested to see a ballistic (external and terminal) comparison between .30/.338 cal rifle bullets and .44 or .45 pistol Bullets in the 220-300gr class projectiles flying at 1050fps.
Seems like both expanding hunting Bullets and pistol caliber cans are more available than .338 or larger rifle cans and expanding bullets.
If subsonic is the goal, a pistol caliber seems very attractive, but maybe I’m missing something.

I need .338 or smaller for can.
I'm interested in the 8.6. If I understand just trim, resize 6.5 Creedmoor brass.
The problem is finding a barrel with a fast enough twist. McGowan amd Pac nor if I recall will do a 6 twist.
I just need a barrel contour with enough meat on the end to thread it. Maybe a #3 shorter? Throw it in a greyboe outlander with a magpul bottom "plastic"
The biggest downside of the 338 fed is the conflicting load data in subs being. Seems like a lot of people that I have read about have struggled finding an accurate load for subs.
