Anyone ever strap children to their pack frame?

Strapped a kelty kid carrier to my kifaru pack. Took off the straps and waist belt off the kelty and it carries very well like this. Life is much better having my little man out while I'm hiking.

The Deuter was a solid choice when the kid was littler but attaching to a frame extended it’s useful life. I tried a few frames but the best combo for me was the Exo K3 and the crib load panel. That seemed to keep things the most secure if the kid was moving around.

I would just look for a deuter kid carrier pack on FB market place. People use them a handful of times before their kids get too big and just want to get rid of them. I had my daughter in one at RMNP this summer at 6 years old and near 50 lbs. same thing. Like the last mile. It’s as comfortable as my SG pack, and I enjoy the netted back / air space. I get less back sweat and swamp ass.

My Dad used to haul my little sister on backpacking trips (late 60’s) in a full length REI bag and old external frame. He would put his sleeping bag in the bag and sit my sister on it. Then he’d put other gear around her. She sat in there on a bunch of trips until she was old enough to walk the distance. Remembering that method, I hauled my grandson once in a Kuiu Ultra 4000 in a similar fashion. He was almost 3 years old at the time and it worked really well.

I carried my son in the old Kifaru Tahr for a mountain lion hunt. I place something in the bottom to make it rigid for him to stand on. He loved it.

I bought myself a used Kifaru frame and tried it with my kids. The youngest three fit in the bag but the oldest fit better sitting on the meat shelf.

This is great, because if I have a convenient way of packing them out I can plan to go a little farther in.

Started with the Osprey strapped to my Kifaru frame and then moved it to my Seek Outside frame, which I felt carried it better. Since then I've moved to placing them in one of the large SO bags with an internal load shelf and gear strategically placed under/around them. They seem to prefer this method and both my boys fell asleep more often in that bag vs the Osprey.

I used a grab-it as a makeshift backrest for my son when he was about 3 to keep him on top of an X-ray. It worked remarkably well, wish I'd gotten a picture.

Did you fashion the Grabit almost like a field chair? Was your on son sitting on top of the closed lid or were his legs inside?

I’ve used an Osprey Poco and i felt like it carried the weight of the kids to the point they didn’t really fit in the carrier at all (3-3.5 YO, ~35 lbs). The Poco is technically rated up to 45 lbs but I don’t think it would comfortable for the kids that size.

I think the Osprey pack’s are definitely comfortable with 50 lbs or less. Above that weight they start to be inferior to a hunting pack designed for 100+ lb weights but you don’t need that weight capacity to carry a kid on a day hike.

My longest day with carrying a kid in the Osprey Poco was 13 miles and +4,000 elevation

He was on top of the closed lid. The grabit's bottom was attached to the front of the pack, with the upper straps attached to my shoulder straps so it acted like a backrest.

Years ago I bought a Cabelas Alaskan pack frame with the fold out shelf and wanted to test it out and got my wife to crawl up on it. At 5'2" and about 115 lbs soaking wet that pack frame held up just great!
