Anyone ever strap children to their pack frame?

I am looking around for a quality pack, but I also often hike with young kids that can’t always make that last mile. Has anyone ever put the kids on the meat shelf and belted them in? Did it work well, or not at all? How big of a kid has ridden this way? My kids are 30 lbs and up.

The main pack I’m considering is an Eberlestock mainframe with bat wings for day hikes, but if there are other options that double as kid-carriers I’d love to see pictures and hear stories of how well it works.

Only for R&D. Had to test my rigged up Kifaru cargo net to my circa 1998 Kelty pack.

Looks like it would carry okay, but not super comfortable for the kid. I guess that would encourage them to walk more though.

Ha, that's true! My intentions were only to test some weight on the rigged up setup, not to see if I could actually carry the little guy.

I'm sure you'd be able to rig something up.

I always thought Kifaru or one of the DIY guys should jump on this market. So many guys with a 400 dollar kifaru frame would haul their kids around with it. What about a grab-it for a "seat"

Your fix for the situation appears to be to have your gal carry the kid. You sir, are brilliant!!!
Ha, she just wanted to see how it felt. He tended to ride his bike about halfway of an out and back and then I got to carry him and his ride back then.

My son/grandson. I suppose this is sort of attached to the frame.
He's in the bag

I used a grab-it as a makeshift backrest for my son when he was about 3 to keep him on top of an X-ray. It worked remarkably well, wish I'd gotten a picture.

Thanks for all the replies. Looks like there are multiple ways to make this work!

Heavy duty book in the bottom of a bag and my kids stand, wouldn't go for miles and miles but they enjoy it.

An addition to this discussion.... Snacks that are easily accessible without removing the child/pack is a key to doing any reasonable distance carrying the kiddos lol. It took me one trip to put a belt pouch on the stryker for food.

I'm pretty happy with how the Deuter kid comfort packs work on their own, not sure I'd frankenstein one onto my hunting pack. @sram9102's solution looks good for when you're not necessarily planning on carrying kiddo out though.
