Awesome! If I buy anything I don't want to fly home with like gas cans, extra meals, etc...I'll pass it to you if we can link up before I fly out. I'll be leaving Aug 31 as of now but might extend it. My number is 609.381.3594...I should be getting close to enough posts to PM too. Good luck to you too if I don't hear back 👊🏻

Ignore all the negativity. Good time to start planning! It'll be a blast. Not sure why everyone is saying "you won't get one" or they only saw three caribou or whatever.....I spend a lot of time up there. I see hundreds every trip. If you're road hunting and don't ever stop and glass, you'll never see one. If you stop for even 5 minutes with some binos or a scope, you'll find some. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I'll see you up there!

Thanks! I did end up reaching out to you by the way. All you had left was a Suburban and I was thinking about it but already had a pickup on hold.

As for the folks on here, I just don't know lol. It was a simple question and it went right over their heads. Not even sure if I'm hunting the actual haul road or getting transported away from it but either way, I'll probably have some items to give away if we can meet up. Gas cans, target, etc.

I appreciate the advice!

Following for fun, I always thought this sounded like a cool hunt, even if just for the simple fact there is nothing else quite like it.
Good luck!

I’ve been up to hunt the haul road. Incredible views and hunt. Good luck! I hope you have a great time.

I will be up there third ish week of September moose hunting a draw tag. Depending on how the hunt goes we might run the extra miles north to try to get on a stalk or two if there’s time.

I just might have to do this hunt solo, or with my girlfriend who is a non-hunter.

Just my personal opinion, I would try to avoid either of those unless your girlfriend is very invested in the experience of the trip and outdoorsy. A lot of the drive is pretty monotonous- I would definitely not call it the most scenic road trip in AK. The Brooks is a different story, but a small percentage of the distance you'll be traveling.

Don't think I'd go so far as to say solo is high risk, but you're definitely only one compounding factor from things getting weird. Vis can go from a lot to nothing very quickly, and everyone knows the terrain lends itself to injuries. Few miles in on a stalk and both of those happen your way... be good to have a buddy. At very least, "two is one" on your satellite messengers.

In either case, good luck and have fun!

Thanks! We both do a lot of backcountry traveling but she's more into fly fishing. I'm still up in the air on what I'm going to do and I definitely hear you on the added risks of solo but previous experience has shown me other people can be a liability too. Also, the friend I'll be visiting up there works for BLM (and is actively employed given recent events). She might take a ride too. For now, I have the truck reserved and that's as far as I've gotten.

Someone on here reached out about going and I'll be keeping an eye out for others who will be up there the last week of August

Congrats on the tag! I know my info will be a little outdated for your trip, but I'll make sure to let you know how it goes anyway.
