I was surf fishing at Orange Beach AL last year and will be going to Destin FL.

I had some frustrations with loosing rigs and weights during casting.

looking for knot and rig recommendations.

Thank you

The FG not is a pain to learn, but hands down the best way to attach a leader to braided line without doing the even more wild hollow core splice. If your leader material is FC, I've found this to be the easiest knot to tie consistently - https://www.fishtrack.com/article/how-to-tie-the-double-improved-clinch-knot Other knots are a little stronger, but harder to tie well. If you're using mono there are any number of knots that work well, that one I just showed, palomar, improved clinch, trilene, etc..... How heavy is your line? If you're trying to chuck a 3 oz weight on 12lb line, just the weight will potentially break your line on the cast.

Pompano aren’t very big. But always the chance of something else big. FC is more abrasion resistant, but doesn’t have the knot strength or shock absorption of mono. Saltwater fish are much stronger than fresh. Start with a light drag.

Pardon the interruption but get a Breakaway Cannon for surf fishing. Saves your finger on the braid and increases distance. Use zip ties to attach. Any tape will get loose in the heat and salt water.

Most electrical tape holds itself just fine when wet. Cannons can help but aren't a necessity. Op needs to provide more details, if he wants to catch pompano, big reds, or sharks the answers are dramatically different.

Surf fishing in the gulf is simpler than fishing in the ocean. You don’t need as much weight or as big of rods for long casts past the waves.

I use braid fo every type of fishing except surf fishing. When fishing the surf, I use mono as I’ve found that braid gets tangled more and less forgiving if you don’t have enough weight.

I agree that it would help to be specific with what kind of fish you are targeting. If you are just looking for a tug, a pompano rig (two small colorful floats and beads with two hooks - I prefer kahle hooks.). is pretty hard to beat. You can obviously catch pompano but also whiting which are plentiful in the gulf. Use sand fleas or shrimp tails as bait.

If it’s calm without a ton of current, I like to wade with free lined shrimp or baitfish.
