Another reason to not cut out your phone to save weight.... Plus some advice for me.

You don't need service in order to use the topo maps location feature.

The endicot maps are amazing and super accurate. I picked up a Neverded external battery at 4.5 ounces and now I have a 9 ounce, camera/gps/book combo with three full charges. Should easily last a week or more with moderate use.

I may give the gaia a try... Does it charge you alot after the intial purchase? Thats the only thing slowing me down on the BCN.

I've used BCN on my Samsung Note 2 for a couple years now. Just have to select specific areas that you will be needing and download from home (wireless). I no longer use my GPS as the screen on the phone is much bigger although not quite as good in sunlight as a gps. I use the topo and aerial maps both and love that part of it. It did take a while to learn it and I'm not a techie! I also just have a couple extra batteries that I got off ebay and turn off things you don't need like Sync, bluetooth, wifi, etc. Also dim the screen and use airplane mode and it lasts probably 4 or 5 days for me with 1 battery if I'm not "over-using" it.

no fees at all after 20$ purchase...money well spent

I decided to give it a shot and am liking it so far... Havent got out of service yet so i have a question for you. On the first map you have like 4 overlays right away, if you download an area in the one overlay does it download all 4 of those overlays??

Just bought the Phil Endecott app for iphone. Thanks for the tip. I will try it out tomorrow in S Arizona when I get out there for my hunt.

I'm not positive, I haven't downloaded any in a while. On the ones I have downloaded some of the favorites for me are the raster and Google earth

Remember to download the maps you need before getting out there!! Play with the settings a little also it will help!

Is this the $7.99 app on the Iphone?

Yes i believe that was the price of it

Gaia works fine in airplane mode as a GPS....whether you are in cell range or not. If you want to use maps and aerial photos for an area where you are out of cell coverage, just download them off WIFI or cell coverage ahead of time and save them......easy or I couldn't do it. Gaia does not show land ownership. It works great in BC, Canada. My favorite of the 13 map/photo options Gaia came with is "world imagery and roads" so I assume it works all over the world, but I haven't looked more than 3000 km from home so can't personally verify this.

For $20 if you already have an iPhone or iPad, just buy the Gaia app. You can put it on up to 5 devices. Seems like a no brainer to me versus a $300-$600 GPS with map chips that cost $150 when we bought ours a few years ago. The iPhone 5S with Gaia I use blows away the Garmin Oregon 450T GPS that I had and broke the screen on. Good luck with it!

Just curious, I didn't see any plugs for OnX. Do y'all prefer the Gaia for navigating over the OnX or do you have any preferences.

Tried onx last year and had trouble with it even with pre downloaded maps and putting it in offline mode. It did work great when I had Internet signal. I contacted them and the big update earlier this year was to fix those issues. Will try it again this year.

I am running the new updated onyx app on my phone and it is awesome! I thought it would take up a lot of space downloading sections of maps with layers but it hardly takes up any memory. Also the battery life is pretty good if I'm tracking where I'm going.

Nice I bought it last year to use in IL for the land ownership but unfortunately it apparently wasn't available where I was hunting.

Can you use your PC to dictate which sections/layers to download to phone? Or, is selecting which ones you want easier than the previous version (which, frankly, sucked)?
