So I am in the same boat as several others and thinking of buying a used 4 wheeler... I get the impression that many 4 wheelers are transferred with a bill of sale and no title. Is there a concern about buying a stolen 4 wheeler? Do most 4 wheelers have a tile? Don't worry about it and just buy one?

No title = lower sale price to me. Unless buying from a known source. I had a hassle a few years ago buying a hetski without a title. Got a bill of sale from the guy. Had to track the guys exwife down as it was actually in her name. If you do not need to tag the atv or prove its yours later you can get one without a title, but there are risks.

I would agree with no title usually means lower price but it depends on the state and if it is required for registration.

You can always run a vin with the police department to see if it’s stolen.

The state you live in, and any you may use it in.

Not exactly the same situation, but Oklahoma doesn't require tags on personal trailers. I've taken to having them on all mine because I pull them in Texas, which results in getting pulled over.

They can't ticket me for it, but it's a pain.

Every ATV I've had either had a title, except one. He "couldn't find it"

No ATV titles in my state either, and this is a very ATV prominent state.

If you're concerned about buying something stolen, you could go to the DMV/DVS where you buy registration, and ask them to check the VIN. They're going to do that after the sale when you go to register it in your name anyway.

In many cases that means the seller did not pay state sales tax and registration fees when they purchased it new. When a vehicle is new it is sold with a Manufactures Statement of Origin or M.S.O. The buyer takes the M.S.O. to their DMV and pays sales tax, title fee, registration and license plates where required.

If you buy an ATV that was never titled the only way to get a title is to get the original purchaser to pay the fees and wait for a title then transfer it to you. Here in AZ if you get caught with a vehicle that was not titled it will be impounded. The only way to get it back is to pay all the fines, tow fee, impound fees and show that you have obtained the title and registered the vehicle.

In Missouri you title an ATV, a SxS does not.
I bought a UTV from my brother who lives in MO. He bought it new and never titled it. I brought it to AZ where they are required to be titled and registered. My brother had to go to the county and pay for a title, sales taxes etc. Then he signed the title to me. I then had to take the UTV in for a Level 2 inspection before I could transfer the title and get it registered. It was a giant pain in the rear.
