Yikes

I had a grizzly get within 60 yards of me while ell hunting in 2021. Big critters.

Fortunately, after I made myself known to him, he turned and just walked away peacefully.

This is so unfortunate, how will bear numbers ever recover if people keep shooting them?!

On the brink of extinction...

My wife showed me some fb posts/comments from bear 399's death. There are some seriously crazy people out there. A whole bunch more need shot or ran over.
Every time I get a suggestion of a person to follow and their first post is some sorrowful mourning over that bear's death, I block them. I think I'm up to 15 so far....

I always rationalize that the odds of being attacked are so astronomically low that I don't need to worry about it. But I got to thinking and a quick look at the hunting stats in the Island park area says 4,500 deer hunters and 2,500 elk hunters every year. Allowing for some overlap maybe 5,000 hunters spend time in there every year. 1 or 2 attacks occur every year. 1:2500 odds of getting chewed on by a grizzly while hunting that area is a lot higher than I expected. Still, pretty low all things considered.

Yes, thousands more recreate and camp in the area but it seems most attacks occur on hunters due to the nature of our activity making it more likely to encounter grizzlies, hence only looking at hunter numbers.

Tough to co-exist with a critter that is intolerant. Maybe if you kill all the cranky ones the species will evolve into a more tolerant one.

Anyone that loves the grizzly needs to be given a cow moose for a yard pet.
Just give us a hunting season and it would be amazing to watch the cranky ones reduce in numbers. Maybe not because they are killed directly (some certainly would be) but rather they would not grow up in an environment where humans are seen as merely competition, continuing the evolving you mentioned. You can see it in California now, lions dgaf about people. Good luck finding a lion in any other western state that would do anything other than flee when confronted by a human.

Man read my recent thread. I think there are a lot more close encounters that are never reported. I had two in three days in NW WY after not really taking it very seriously and then starting to wonder when that dude from GA got chewed on.

I have thousands of miles in the Alaskan backcountry and have been within a stone's throw of brown bears more times than I can count. Out by Yellowstone a few weeks ago was the first time in my life I've ever had a really bad feeling about both the number and disposition of bears.

There are some seriously crazy (mostly women) out there crying about that dang bear. Most of them probably wouldn't mourn their husband as much as 399.
