We all know that on Rokslide, the term “liberal” refers to someone that disagrees with over something for which you are not articulate enough to provide a counter-argument.
When I get tired of getting called a liberal on Rokslide, I just go over to Reddit where everyone calls me a fascist and alt-right, that way I get some nice balance in my life.

This must be the most scholarly and well debated communication amongst any people who ever existed that were in anyway fans of or associated with being fans of the band, or just like to talk about the [ultra shitty] post grunge-wannbes “Stained”

Are we going to have a philosophical discussion about the band Creed next or should we skip straight to the late 90s nu metal bands? Was Korn better than Limp Bizkit? What about Mushroom Head?

Anyway, I actually can’t wait to watch the Woodstock 99 documentary.

For the most part, without liberals we (the West) wouldn’t have literature, Art, music, architecture, etc. Am thinking most of us here are centrists that lean a little bit more in one direction of the other. That’s a good, if not great thing. Leftists (and you can include alt-right societies as well), and a move beyond a balanced, centered checks-and -balances approach is what I was arguing against above.

I agree with that 100%. Dramatic societal shifts in either direction are disruptive. Sometimes-like the revolutionary war- we look back and say that disruption was worth it. I think We both agree that not many Athenians felt that their disruptions were worth losing to Sparta (then Thebes, then Macedon, then Rome, etc. it’s pretty much been downhill for the Greeks ever since)

Many likely fit into the parameters of Classical Liberalism:

Classical liberalism is a political ideology and a branch of liberalism that advocates civil liberties under the rule of law with an emphasis on economic freedom. ... Notable liberal individuals whose ideas contributed to classical liberalism include John Locke, Jean-Baptiste Say, Thomas Robert Malthus and David Ricardo.

For example, Jordan Peterson defines himself as a “Classical Liberal” though many seem to think he’s far right wing.

The media likes to try and paint him into the right wing for the purpose of creating click bait. “How else are we gonna get you to read the news we sell if it isn’t EXPLOSIVE!?”

I have thoroughly enjoyed every single piece I’ve listen to or watched from Jordan Peterson. I might have somewhere upwards of 100 hours between podcasts and YouTube.

The title that I like most, or the one that I like to think describes me best is that of Rugged Individualist. I came up dirt poor, but now I’m not. And am now trying to be responsible to you ( in a plural sense), my wife, my children, etc. by taking responsibility in my own small way and making the world around me a better place. These are my private prayers truth be told.

Just saw this:

TN Capitol Building removes Nathan Bedford Forrest bust: https://apple.news/A_8O0dimNRPyHF1hDnCt20A

Controversy aside, NBF does appear to have been a very interesting figure in history. Rommel studied his battlefield tactics and based the “Blitzkreig” concept on them. There is a book on this called “Rommel & The Rebel” -he apparently visited the US in the late 30s and retraced all of NBF’s battles, even met William Faulkner in the process.

I used to hunt a 1000 acre farm in TN positioned on some MS River bluffs. During the civil war, a fort was built on the property which hosted a famous NBF battle “battle of fort pillow”, where NBF’s men were accused of massacring surrendering Union soldiers, though records seem to indicate that they did in fact take prisoners and even released the wounded, some of whom were black, but that’s a matter of controversy.

Anyway, after the war, the feds gave the seized land to the state, who turned the fort into a state park and built a prison on the other end, reducing what was once a sprawling 50,000 acre estate to a 1,000 acres. The family is still bitter about this seizure to this day as they never gave permission for a fort to be built on their property. The prison was a self functioning farm for decades with the prisoners growing their own food and raising livestock. The ACLU put an end to that so most of the prison farmland is now leased for sod farming. All that being said, 1,000 acres positioned between a state park and a expansive prison sod farm, neither of which allow hunting, was in fact prime deer hunting. Historical, too.

“Precisely because of this didactic nature of Thucydides’ lengthy narrative—predicated on the belief that human nature is unchanging across time and space and thus predictable—the conflict of Athens and Sparta is supposed to serve as a lesson for what can happen to any people in any war in any age. A central theme is the use and abuse of power, and how it lurks behind men’s professions of idealism and purported ideology. What men say, the speeches diplomats give, the reasons states go to war, all this “in word” (logos) is as “likely to cloak rather than to elucidate what they will do “in deed” (ergon). Thucydides teaches us to embrace skepticism, expecting us to look to national self-interest, not publicized grievances, when wars of our own age inevitably break out.”

Impossible. It will never be great for all Americans. We all have the same opportunity but not everyone is willing to get off their ass and make life great for themselves. It sounds like you are waiting for AOC and Bernie to step in with their socialism communist bullshiz and make life equitable for everyone. Just look at the shitstorm that is every liberal city. I guess that when the entire country is like that it will be great for everyone?
by your own definition, there is no such thing as a "liberal city." Nice try tho

The problem here is the definition. Today's "liberals" are anything but. When words have no meaning we are doomed.

Edit - to me, liberal philosophy means the absence of force or coercion - apply that through the lens of today's "liberals" and reply back to let us know who, in today's democratic party meets those standards. They had one that was close in Tulsi Gabbards but we all saw what happened to her.

We are all here for the counterarguments but we often find them lacking.

The liberals of yesteryear - F##k you I won't do what you tell me...

The current "liberals" - F##k you, you better do what they told ya....
