Am I the only one here that couldn’t wait to take a local trip to try out my new gear. Bought the last piece of my backpack tent/sleep system. I set everything up on the backyard Friday night to test it out in the cold and rain. Everything worked as I hoped.
Just thought I’d share.

Nope the wife and I are planning a night in the yard sunday night to test new gear. I think a person would be nuts not to try new gear on a test run before its go time. Not to mention fun.

I can luckily say I have been camping about 6 times this past winter trying out all my new gear. NC winters are pretty easy compared to most northern and western states.

I have definitely found some gear that would not make it on my Colorado elk hunt. I would hate to have found that out in the back country.

I was planning on taking all my gear to some public ground in northern Mi that I know to try it out but plans fell through. So I decided on the back yard.

Weather.com predicted and delivered a 5 degree night three years ago and I set up my tent, bag and pad to test the pad and bag in the backyard.

My GF was amused and thought I was a bit nuts, but agreed that it was far better to test extremes in the backyard.

(Sleeping bag passed muster, Big Agnes pad was a fail so I bought a Thermarest Xtherm and love it)

Cheers!

Had a bachelor weekend last month and went out in the "yard" to try a few new components and arrangement with tarp and bivy. Just received a new tarp/tent over the weekend and will be out in in sometime this month to see if me and my pile of gear will fit. Another bivy to be ordered so more testing ahead........my wife thinks I'm a bit questionable.......

Bought a WB hammock and tarp last summer for an Oct elk hunt. First time in a hammock and heard all the tales, some love them some not. So I set it up in the yard and slept in it every night for 4 days until I got it dailed in. So glad I did, but very happy with it.

I have never did the backyard thing. I can never bring myself to do it with my good bed that close. I try to get in as many backpacking trips outside of hunting season as possible. I do a lot of setup tinkering in the yard.
I did get in the one trip in the photos with the tipi and the stove in February. Had sub 15 degree temps so that let me pressure test everything pretty good.
The pictures of the tarp setup is from this past weekend. Trying to perfect the flying diamond pitch. That was in preparation for a backpacking round weekend after next.

Bought all my gear over the BlacK Friday sale weekend. Planned on trying everything at a friends exotic ranch this winter but got stuck working out of town.

Gonna have to figure something out now that I'm finally home!

I plan on doing the same once I have all my gear assembled. At least I won't be the only one "camped" in my own yard:D

Definitely not alone, after I got my new sleep system I picked the coldest, rainiest night in the back yard to test it out. I’d much rather find the flaws in my system when I’m 100 feet from a warm bed than 5 miles deep in the back country.

I did it a few years back when I got my first backpacking tent and lightweight sleeping bag. Set it up in the back yard one night when it was going to get down into the teens with some snow and gave it a go. Glad I did, because I found out I don't sleep very warm and I now know to use a bag rated for about 15-20 degrees warmer than than the forecasted low temps.

First step is always the backyard, then a truck camp, then a pack trip. All well before September. This is Rokslide, if we weren't excited about this stuff, we wouldn't be here.

Another yard camper/tester here. Picked the coldest night we had (teens) for a tipi/pad/sleeping bag test. All went well. Slept warm in a 0F bag and a R5 pad.

I really like the Ti Goat tent.i have the vertex 5. It is pretty well spot on for solo trips with the stove. I do alot of tinkering with setup and such in the yard. I mess around with guylines and staking type stuff. I'll also set a new or well used tent up before a good rain to test for leaks. Or you take the water hose and create an artificial shower. The tinkering never ends for me, I just can't bring myself to sleep in the yard
