Am I crazy for expecting a leader ship role vs a lower stress position for close to the same money?

So long story short I applied to a different company and received a job offer for it, the compensation is higher then I thought it would be.

In the meantime my current employer recently created a lead role/management and they have offered the role to me.

The total compensation is within a few thousand dollars a year so very similar.

Both roles are in the same industry. Obviously the lead role comes with a lot more responsibilities.

One side of me wants the mental challenge of the lead role and to be able to add it to my resume and then one side of me wants to take the easy less stress job but I am worried I will get bored in the role….


Any advice?

I once asked for a title change on a similar scenario. The less stressful job gave me a different title that wasn’t quite as good as the other but good enough to pad the resume. I just proposed it as hey I see XYZ are responsibilities sounds like the job is more like this and I was wondering if we could reflect it like that in the offer. They just said hey you’re right good idea

What do you enjoy about the career field? Is the basis of the less stressful job enough to fill your cup? Does the leadership job sound good because of ego(not implying anything but I would have this thought) or pure challenge? What opportunities will the resume pad give you in the future? Do you want to take advantage of those? All questions I would consider if it were me. Personally if something was less engaging of the brain and didn’t provide some sort of varying challenge I would get bored, quick. Especially if it was something I was comfortable doing. I don’t think you would regret taking the more responsibility position but may regret taking the easy road.

As noted above stress can take its toll, only you know your tolerance level. I’m just a guy on the internet with no experience in your field offering a random perspective. Hopefully whichever one you choose makes you happy! Good luck.

Was this a counter offer to the new company, to get you to stay?

No they don’t know about the new job offer at all, they knew I was getting bored and expressed interest in a leader ship role and I waited for awhile and then now received both offers on the same week…

Can I ask how old you are? If a lead role at 30ish, comes with being away from my family, than it’s a hard no. I say this because I took that role then. I thrived in the role, but it cost me dearly in my personal life. IF your kids are solid if you have them, and spouse as well, then being in a “make a difference” role can be VERY rewarding!

Tough call. I took a counter off and ended up leaving the company two years later. Then took a higher paying less responsibility job and felt I wanted more.

I interviewed for a supervisor role a few years ago, I now report to a then-current equal on the org chart, meaning I didn't get the job, she did. She's fantastic to report to. But she gets the stress and pressure to a level I'm happy I didn't get. She gets a little more money for way more stress. I lucked out not getting the promotion, in my opinion. Although I understand it's all relative to the industry, person, etc. And as my brother often said in his leadership career: "it's lonely at the top." I wouldn't know. Ha! As long as I feel challenged and rewarded in my work, with good compensation, I'm happy.

Not sure I have advice since everyone has different ambitions and drivers.

Are you at the beginning, middle, or end of your career?

What are your future goals and which one lines up better with them?

If it’s the higher stress job, can you handle it with the rest of your current life, or would the added stress not be worth it?

How well can you detach from the job outside of it? Will the stress follow you home? Or when you are off work are you truly off?

No need to answer, but I’d consider those things as well.

I went from leading a sales team (10 sales people, plus support staff, another 80 members) to a role where I have no reports and I’m on an island.

The freedom of my role now is really nice come hunting season, but I do miss the excitement of leading a sales team.

I prefer the previous role honestly. A lot more stress but I’m a competitive person and I liked driving toward a goal, comparing myself and team to other teams, etc.

Which one gives you more free time and vacation time?

Which one has a higher ceiling if you want to progress?

Both have the same paid holiday time one is a 8 days on and 6 off. Other is 4 days on 3 off both 10 hour days

Take the bigger money and less stress.
1) that tells me that there is room to move up later.
2) salary is THE indicator in future career growth because it directly exemplifies your value. Titles, stated responsibilities, etc., seem neat, but when you want to climb decision makers are going to look at what you currently make to either step on the gas or pump the brakes for offering.

I’m in my 30s but I will be home every night

I was offered higher management positions at my company but I declined. I’ve shed my staff management responsibilities and now just have to manage my own projects working from home. Flexibility is more important to me than money. I much prefer freedom over a 20% pay increase for 50% more work
