Hey all,

Looking to go with a lighter tent than current, but I wont use it more than probably 2 trips a season. Looking at the ALPs Mountaineering Trail Tipi and looking for thoughts.

What I like: the budget, while it's a shorter roof it only needs 1 trekking pole, looks like enough room to sleep 2 without too much hassle, it's under 4lbs (could be lighter with better stakes and line), full floor, single wall so no worrying about getting the inside of the tent soaking wet during a storm...

I dont like: full floor, only a single wall.

I understand it is not the best tipi on the market but are there any better options in the under $200 price range? I'm not super interested in a stove at this point, but some of the options that have a removable inner tent look interesting. I'm just not sure I'm actually committed a stove one way or another.

Has anyone used one of these, and have any opinions?

I've seen alot of feedback on the Luxe systems, they are probably my other option at this point but I havent seen a lot of feedback on the ALPs s
Tipi. But I'm not kidding myself, I dont need a top tier tipi, not even sure I'll like it. So for my 2ish trips a season (probably more like 1.5 good trips a year) looking for a good reasonable compromise. I'll be testing it in the yard for sure to make sure I like it before packing in. Rest of the year when my spoiled butt isnt sleeping in my own bed, I'll be sleeping in the camper! Lol

Why not go with a regular tent? You don’t mind a floor and won’t be needing a stove.

Where the tipi shines is not having a floor, weight to space ratio, and being able to use a stove.

If you want a tipi or flourless, Slimberjack just released their tipi. And, the mountain smith mountain shelter is a good option as well.

Desire on the tipi is that it's a lightweight 2 person, easy to set up, no poles to pack in and not very high so should be decent in the wind. I know there are a lot of options out there, but this ALPS just caught my eye as it seems to check my boxes and is super budget friendly.

Same price, half the weight.

$100 on moosejaw...

That Alps looks kind of interesting but it's heavy for what you're getting.

That is a interesting shelter for sure... not sure I'm ready for a floorless or not... could always throw my pad on a light tarp I guess...

I see now they do have a footprint for it... interesting shelter. Probably just right size for 1 person and gear, looks small for 2 people but doable.

I had a similar debate not long ago and opted for the Luxe. It is a bit more money but it is definitely lighter. My deciding factor was that I figured the Luxe was the closest I could get to a Seek Outside style without spending serious money. I’ve had my 2p luxe now for 2 years and have never regretted buying it. I’ve been snowed in, set out gnarly storms and wind and haven’t had any issues. They’re worth the money.
