Amazing episode tonight...Callie is coming back strong and killing it compared to the remaining 4 others. Guy with a bow is sure a timid pig hunter eh? How the heck do ya get hypothermia after having so much time to build a proper shelter, collect wood, maybe made a stone oven. I would have stripped my wet clothes off, dried my stuff and drank hot water constantly inside my shelter. That guy was no survivalist...failed the most basic of tests.

I totally agree, the guy had a nice fire going, should have been able to dry out and stay warm. Just goes to show how the mental aspects of survival play a huge roll, i truly believe callie will take it all, her attitude is in the right spot.

And she builds a heckuva mousetrap too. She is crushing this competition despite the recluse spider bites. A total domination of the challenge on every level. CALLIE CALLIE CALLIE

Yeah it became official after her joke about going home I am on the Callie bandwagon. I also couldnt figure out why what's his name didn't take his clothes of by a couple of fires (to warm front and back) it had to have been all mental and an excuse to go home. I haven't been in a situation like that so I can't judge but mental toughness is absolutely the biggest factor in survival

My wife and I were wondering about Callies decision to stay with 3 serious spider bites, " I feel it has gone into my glands" . Not sure if it was smart or tough.
I guess it will be interesting , the poultice pulled from the bite site , but probably not deeper that that, hope she doesnt suffer long term effects from the venom.
Sleep deprivation, lack of nutrition, and hypothermia probably play such a big factor in poor decisions. He made his biggest mistake early by not picking the proper site for shelter while he had a clear mind and strength to do it, that would be my strategy , do the labor intense work right off while you can.
I think the guy it the orange beanie will do well.

I think that Callie and Fowler should move in together:eek:

Randy

P.S. Now my eyes ain't as good as they used to be but when ol Dave put an arrow on getting ready to slay a boar, it looked like a judo point on the end of his arrow. That is going to be one pissed off boar..............

Its funny, during the first episode Callie bugged the hell out of me...truth be told she still does a little (we actually laughed out loud when she no shit hugged a tree), but damn my wife and I are hoping she wins. The minimal issues/setbacks that the other contestants have faced and opted to go home, Callie is rocking 3 nasty bites and is perfectly at ease with her self and her situation.

Fowler also seems like he has a good head on his shoulder and keeps his mind active with building...he could go far.

A fix back east
Indeed it was.
Selective editing from the producers. They probably had quite a bit of video to use and they felt that was the best clip of him nocking an arrow. Dave doesn't bring a bow with broadheads and judo points without knowing to use the broadhead on a boar.
I totally agree, the guy had a nice fire going,
He burned all his available firewood at his last location building big white man fires outside and then had to move camp in the rain. His new shelter wasn't very complete and after getting drenched he had his fire outside in the rain and had to sit too far back. Poor decisions. The guy has heart, but he would have been better off with a small fire in his shelter. Allan, in season one, basically sheltered in a coffin with a fist-sized fire for heat.

As far as them not traveling much, I think contestants are pretty limited in the distance that they can move about. IIRC, think it was less than a square mile or two.

It is pretty easy to criticize from the couch...making it 50 days is no joke...that said, watching people "rationalize" is one of the best parts. It reminds me how easy it is to talk yourself off the mountain or off of anything in life.

Stuff from this season that stood out:
-Pretty sure that kid that fell on his axe had a Kifaru Slick bag. I like looking at the gear lists

-You don't catch hypothermia like you do a cold. I was going nuts with that canadian guy...sure you fell in cold water. Guess what, you had a fire, sleeping bag and dry clothes. The NEXT DAY he is still claiming he has hypothermia...good grief. Remind me not to take this guy duck hunting.

-People spend way too much time on shelters and camp stuff. Figuring out food should be the highest goal after a decent shelter. I don't think anyone has ever tapped out because their shelter sucked.

-Who sets up snares with with fishing line? I'm no trapper but that seems like a no brainer that it needs to be wire or something stronger. Especially for boar...has no one ever seen a boar? Those things will tear all those snares to shreds

-Same goes for a boar pit. It should probably be deep enough that the boar won't just roll off the stakes and wander away bleeding.

-finally, if you are setting up an ambush for boar with your recurve and hear them coming, consider grabbing a different arrow. Judo point probably won't get it done. Lol.

I would build a teepee shelter out of the wind near plenty of dead wood, build a cot so I'm off the wet ground. Those tarp are plenty big and would cover the top of a sizable teepee. Insulating it would be a snap. You could use as many poles as you like for rigidity. Not hard to make a gravel floor, small fire ring, drying rack, chair either. I would expect inquisitive visitors at night and surround my shelter with snares and traps with a couple of spears handy to dispatch critters in or around my campsite. One pig would set you up to win. But if you are not making a home for yourself then you are not gonna last. Callie gets it, she moved in and built herself a home, settled in and is living, not surviving.

I really like Callie's attitude. You said it Bruce. She build herself a home!

Hunger and loneliness is what gets people to tap out though and the two go hand in hand. Gotta eat. Cracks me up when they say "i'm not surviving, I'm thriving!" Not much longer on 100 calories a day you aren't. The nicest house in the world still won't feed you. They are all probably long out of rations and fishing is getting harder.

Callie was smart, she sacrificed her ax in favor of double rations. That and her ability to identify edible plants will solve any hunger issues and since she lives alone off grid (without power or running water) as a lifestyle choice...she is not gonna suffer like the guys with single rations and used to air conditioning and heating. <g>

I totally think Callie can win. But nobody can claim they are living and thriving off the land unless they are getting enough food to sustain themselves and the plants are going away with the winter.. I think it would have been much easier on Vancouver then Patagonia.

I will say this though. Patagonia rains a lot. But it definitely seemed like Vancouver rained alllll the time. I think the rain drives people crazy. They get tired of sitting there thinking about their wife and a bacon cheeseburger

I enjoyed the first 2 seasons but this seasons episodes have not been available online so I have only seen the first.

I was disappointed in the first 2 seasons contestants. This is a long term game and none of them ever got beyond the survival mentality and transitioned to wilderness living. Reading the comments here makes it sound like some people have made that transition.

I would love for them to do a season with some experienced hunters instead of all the emotional nutcases who attended a few weekend survival courses.

I think what has helped season 2 and 3 are the fact that they have seen others mistakes in real time and the season 3 contestants know more of what to expect and things to avoid. Not to take away from their skills at all they are doing well.
