Allergy to latex diaphragm reeds

Hokay there’s gotta be other people going though this.

I got pretty good at using diaphragm elk calls from Phelps, put down 2 elk in my first couple years hunting them with calling. Very proud

The following year, my tongue and roof of my mouth were super swollen throughout the hunting season, have had issues with other latex products with skin contact ect.

Saw doctor, he said yep you have latex allergy, no reason to see specialist just stop touching it dummy. Little does he know this was life shattering news to an elk hunter

Rocky Mountain elk calls sells “da bull” diaphragm reed which is latex free. But it is a sub par reed compared to the amp frame from Phelps. I have a couple external mouth pieces to use… the Rocky Mountain elks calls one. And the Phelps EZ bugle for the metal tube is on its way to my house as we speak.

Anyone out there with experience or advice with this? I’m not opposed to gargling Benadryl before and after using the reeds lol

Not bashing Rocky Mountain elk calls, there latex reeds have been good to me as well. And I appreciate there step in the direction of latex free calls

Many an elk have fallen victim to an external reed call. I have 1 in particular that gets very loud and carries a long long ways when i want it too. I been told its too loud. Thats like saying guus sound too big when bugling with a diaphragm. No such thing as sounding too big by any human caller

Why don't you contact Phelps and ask if they have any plans on putting out a latex free Reed call? I'm sure they have thought about it, and they may have other suggestions for a Reed type of call if that's what you really want to use.

Be interesting to see what they say. Must be a reason why it isn't used as much.
