Hey all, a buddy of mine and I are going to do a DIY Whitetail hunt in the ANF around end of October, but will probably buy a Bear tag as well. I've been looking at some maps and there are some areas I'm interested in, but considering I'm not a local, wanted to see if I could get some info on some spots I had in mind? Spots I'm looking at are off Rt 948. Thanks

Following - I live in central MD and have been interested in doing some western MD public land.

Also, I thought all MD bear tags were lottery?

Nevermind! I just realized you're probably talking about PA. Wrong Allegany lol.

I hunt the west side of ANF. Have been in that area a few times but not many miles on the ground. Open DMs if you want to run it by for input

If you Google the spots/trailheads/mountains/roads and they pop up on anything hunting related, they’re probably going to be busier than you’d like.

It's not in the exact location where you're looking but check out the Kinzua Quality Deer Cooperative. Lots of good info with published deer densities based on location, average harvested weights, points, spread, etc.

I love hunting the ANF. My buddy has a camp around the Tionesta/Tidioute that borders the ANF. We have had pretty good luck the past 4 years during archery season. Like previously stated, get out and do some scouting if you're able. Its such a big area that you need to find sign that deer are in the area youre hunting. Places that have recently been clear cut are a great start.

If you want to get you butt kicked come down to western maryland with me. I have been chasing ghosts for five years. Bear tags are all a lottery system. they drew this years winners last week. I did not draw for the fifth consecutive year.

All , circling back. We learned a lot on that trip. We went the week before Halloween and stayed at the Red Bridge campground. We hunted pretty hard. Up at 4:30 every day except maybe two. Probably sat for at least 10 sits, and scouted every day mid day. It was interesting to see how mountain, big woods deer move in comparison to our area which has low elevation and is completely flat. One tactic that really helped was targeting crossing points at the tops of little valleys kind of like this photo. Both my buddy and I filled a tag sitting off of timber cuts (some of them things are nasty) where deer could move from cut to cut across the tops of little valleys

Congrats. PA big woods can be extremely challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve fallen in love with hunting up there and have decided that the local game lands around me will be for taking the kids out and I’ll reserve my tags for up north.
