Hello all:
A hunting buddy and I are sitting on 7 points in BHD. Through previous learning here we have come to the understanding that it would be fun to turn this into a whitetail hunt instead of mule deer because of the number and size potential. The 12-14 point need for Mule deer just doesn't make sense for us in BH when it comes to the potential of a 140" Mule deer when we can get that in almost OTC units in other states based on previous hunts. Subsequently we are excited to try a new adventure with a whitetail hunt here in SD BH. If anyone disagrees here i'm all ears.
Based on the draw odds I think we can pull pretty easily next year (2025) for a BH SD whitetail rifle tag.
This brings me to my main question. Does anyone have experience hunting WT in this area and have any advice they would be willing to provide in terms of the type of country we should look for when it comes to a specific unit within BH? We will be doing public land DIY so not interested in an outfitter at this point. When i look at these decisions i like areas that have alot of public land so we can get back off the beaten path and not compete with alot of other hunters. So the guidance i'm looking for has to do with these high public land units, terrain to expect to hunt, good numbers for whitetail... etc. etc.
If anyone has any ideas or guidance on this i would appreciate the advice for a SD rookie like myself.
