So for someone who no longer has a 308 in his arsenal, and is looking to add it once again - should I opt for the TMKs or the AMAX? It seems every tikka loves the amax and they seem plentiful to find. But I love what TMKs do to game.

Can’t go wrong with either. I have a stock pile of Amax. If I burn through that then I’ll try TMKs.

I’d try a box of each and let your rifle tell you which one to use. That being said, the TMKs have a significantly higher BC and they shoot VERY well for me.

Midway had a nice deal on some unnamed factory overrun 150 soft points recently... I worked up to 47.5gr of Varget at 2.750" COL. Getting 2720 FPS out of my suppressed 16" barrel Tikka. Not the most accurate at 1.5-1.7" at 100 yards, but fine for short range whitetails. Took a neck shot on a doe this week at 120 yards and just about decapitated her... I didn't measure, but I would guess around a 5" exit wound

Form 4 got approved this week. My first can and it’s an absolute dream to shoot. Spotting impacts better than with my bare muzzle 13.5lb 6.5CM… Should have done it sooner, but glad I finally made the leap. Sitting at 7.7lbs now. I’m hoping it will stay under 8lbs with a gen 2 SWFA 6x and UM rings. Looking at ~2730fps with 150gr bullets and Varget. I might try to hit 2750, but I don’t really need to for my at home hunting distances. Mirage was pretty bad from 5+ round strings so I ordered an LS wild suppressor cover.

Great thread you guys have going here. I really enjoyed making my way through it.

I've owned and have hunted with various .308's through the years. Was never a mainstay for me, but have hunted with them plenty and shot them for fun plenty more.

Just tonight I recieved one of my .308's back. I put it in an ECHO stock to shorten the length of pull for a friend of mine's son whose .243 wasn't grouping for them right before deer season opened. I didn't have time to mess around to see what was up with it, so loaned them this .308, which has been loaned out several times before.

Its worn several stocks through the years, but I think Ill keep it in the ECHO. I shoot it as well as anything and its easily adjustable for others. Though I prefer FFP, the little NF with lit MOAR has been superb. Was going to swap in a 6X SWFA, but the low X SFP and illumination are nice in the heavy timber we generally hunt in. I run it to 600 regularly, usually just work off the reticle on it. It groups tight with about anything. This rig has certainly met the criteria of a bomb proof .308.

This is where I'm at. I celebrate diversity, especially in my gun safes.

Im down to 2 .308's. One is a 99 that's pristine and hasn't been hunting in years. Anyhoo, the .308 are nestled in-between cartridges from .17 HMR to 450.

Well now that I see that I’m debating on the 16” paired one of my suppressors. I was set on a 20”

Something to consider:

For me it depends upon the expected range needed and how thick the vegetation is...

For a woods gun my 16" SFAR with a can is perfect for me.

For longer hunting ranges i would go with a longer barrel in .308

Just recently spun a 308 barrel on my tikka. Had several of them over the years but it’s been a while since I’ve shot one. Loaded up some 168 ELD-M’s with the same charge of Varget I always used with 165-168 class bullets. No surprise it shot just under an inch for 10 shots. I’d forgot how easy/forgiving the 308 is to load for. It also shot several different factory loads with boring consistency. As many have stated it may not be the best at anything but it sure is consistent and predictable. I like playing with different stuff as much as anyone, but in all honesty I think a suppressed 308 in a light/medium weight rifle is hard to beat if you want just 1 to do it all. Looking forward to having one set up again.

Well put, I always seemed to migrate back to the 308 for deer. Currently running a 16" bolt gun suppressed. Really hard to beat for an all around deer rifle

What bullet you shooting here? I'm shooting same thing a 16" suppressed and shooting 165 fusions and they normally bout just tip over but always seem to be looking for something better.

Depends on what the use is and ranges. The MV is low enough with 168’ish grain bullets that for all-around use to 600+ yards? I generally like an 18” or 20” to work with quick drop. However, if that doesn’t matter to you, or if most of the shooting is 400’ish yards and in- the 16” without question.

I have an 18” 223 and 18” 6 creed so I don’t “need” it - however I have killed with one in the past and wouldn’t mind a 308 back in my safe. Would mostly serve as a back up to my 6 creed but also something to train/shoot with year round as an alternative to my 223. If it were a 400 and in east coast rifle, it would be that 16” all day long. But shooting factory ammo the 20” is where I’m leaning for 600 and in.
