I like shooting and hunting with different cartridges, but if I was starting over, I’d have a precision bolt gun and gas gun in 223 for recreational and match shooting. And an 18”- 20” suppressed 308 to hunt with. 99.99 percent of the animals I’ve killed east and west have been inside of 400 yds. Only a couple that were beyond that were because I couldn’t get closer, the rest that I’ve killed beyond 400 were because I could. Inside of 400 the 308 is a hammer. Just plain works without any fuss. The older I get the more I appreciate that.

The 308 does hit like a sledgehammer. I think in the right conditions with the right load, it can kill beyond 500. I do agree that is a rarity

I really think this is where I'm going next. I have a couple of gas guns in 223 but I want a heavier barrel bolt gun to practice even cheaper with and to shoot at coyotes and then eventually I'll buy a nicer 308

I think Form has a couple long kills with the 308. If we use the 1800fps rule I think an eldm or amax might do it at 500 . Here are a couple different loads in a basic ballistic calculator that make it. I'm not personally comfortable at 500 since I'm just not that good, but that doesn't mean the gun couldnt do it in the right hands 1000007210.jpg

Berger 185 OTM Tactical / Juggernaut at 2600 fps will get you 1800 ft lbs out to about 350 to 375 yds depending on elevation, etc. It is one of the easiest bullets to tune that I have ever seen. It kills.

a 200 Hybrid at 2500 fps will get you another 50 yds, maybe.

I’ve shot a bunch of those, never hunted with them though. May have to give them a try. Last few several have been using a quarterbore. I shot a couple with my 308 this year and remember how much I enjoy simplicity. 168 AMaxes worked well but I like to tinker.

I really got into 308 a couple years ago when I got my first suppressor. After doing quite a bit a research I landed on 308 because I could load 130s to 3000 fps and load up to 220 rn for subs. Picked up an 18" savage Magpul edition which I really like. It does everything I need it to do.

1000007297.jpganybody ever look closely at the numbers for 308 vs 223?
I just picked up a 223 to set up the same as my 308 and using the factory bpx data from white box 73 eldm in 223 and black box 168 amax in 308 Its so similar that I feel like I've stumbled into a great way to enjoy more range time for less money, and then I can use the 223 as a trainer for my 308. I adjusted the stock data for the 75 to match the 73.
Obviously I wouldnt use this as gospel for my dope, but its close enough to use to learn for drop and wind call.

How do you like that magpul stock? I was considering having my floppy bedded, or just buying the magpul but I dont know how the geometry would work for offhand, out of a tree type shooting

went grendels for light hitters when available off shelf as it had the bc/sd formula I was after and also .223 not legal for big game here, I like versatility, as off the shelf shooter still wouldn't .223, just go for arcs/grendels for right twists/bullets, I got into grendel game well before the arc's were shot show released, the 308 win to me is my 'fun magnum' over the grendel class and yeah with todays bullet options, even off the shelf ammo with many of those modern bullets its not just a 400 yard cartridge anymore, and it's super easy to hit well in most conditions to 500 and small groups with factory 168 eldm from 20"...it gets pushed around enough at 600 that rough order of magnitude to no wind calls aren't really an option, verticals good but horizontals spread out with the breezes pretty easy although lots left in the tank if your wind game is strong after 500 though

I really like it. It fits me perfectly, most of my shooting is done from ladder stands or shooting houses sometimes off hand but those shots are usually less than 50 yards. It has a wide flat forend that makes it great for shooting with a prop but not so wide as to be uncomfortable shooting free handed. The downside is it's heavy.
