I like shooting and hunting with different cartridges, but if I was starting over, I’d have a precision bolt gun and gas gun in 223 for recreational and match shooting. And an 18”- 20” suppressed 308 to hunt with. 99.99 percent of the animals I’ve killed east and west have been inside of 400 yds. Only a couple that were beyond that were because I couldn’t get closer, the rest that I’ve killed beyond 400 were because I could. Inside of 400 the 308 is a hammer. Just plain works without any fuss. The older I get the more I appreciate that.

The 308 does hit like a sledgehammer. I think in the right conditions with the right load, it can kill beyond 500. I do agree that is a rarity

I really think this is where I'm going next. I have a couple of gas guns in 223 but I want a heavier barrel bolt gun to practice even cheaper with and to shoot at coyotes and then eventually I'll buy a nicer 308

I think Form has a couple long kills with the 308. If we use the 1800fps rule I think an eldm or amax might do it at 500 . Here are a couple different loads in a basic ballistic calculator that make it. I'm not personally comfortable at 500 since I'm just not that good, but that doesn't mean the gun couldnt do it in the right hands 1000007210.jpg

Berger 185 OTM Tactical / Juggernaut at 2600 fps will get you 1800 ft lbs out to about 350 to 375 yds depending on elevation, etc. It is one of the easiest bullets to tune that I have ever seen. It kills.

a 200 Hybrid at 2500 fps will get you another 50 yds, maybe.
