Pretty happy with the 150 gr partitions from Federal. Recoil isnt an issue. My slide unloved 3 shot groups are consistently about 1moa. Had pass throughs on the 2 deer I've shot under 200 yards. Quick bleed outs.

Yea super interesting info, I was kind of heading the same direction on my own before finding this stuff but it has been eye opening for sure. Im really still just past mount stupid as well and hope to be climbing again shortly.

Whats really interesting to me is that I was hell bent on needing a 7 rem mag, 7 prc or 300 win mag for my next rifle elk trip and then I got into the weeds on bullets and realized that for 99% of all the shots I would be capable of making, I wouldnt need a magnum rifle if I selected a proper bullet and made a shot selection based on that bullet.

I started shooting my 308 a ton and I fell back in love with the rifle. Its not the best rifle, but its mine and I shoot it pretty dang well for what I'm capable of. Given the low cost of ammo I can shoot it a ton to practice recoil management and learning my rifle better. Now I'm excited to use it with a new bullet option and I can't wait to have a chance to see how they perform. I've got steel hung up on my property at various distances and I have been practicing shooting off a pack, bipod, shooting sticks, and trying to get as much real world practice as I can.

Its been really fricken fun to shoot in the wind and see what that does to my bullet impact at the farther distances that I'm able to shoot at home.

In a similar spot. I had a 270, 7mmRM, 300WM, and 338WM. Essentially came to the conclusion that the 270 was overkill for everything and my other rifles had no real purpose. I did pick up a 6.5 and have a 223 on order. But I also have nearly 6k round of 308 (nothing special just the 147g fmj stuff but that is still an absurd amount of low cost practice ammo) so looking to pick up one of these as well.

If only the 178gr AMAX was still made. The difference in the ogive and tip on the ELD-M dramatically changed that bullets behavior.

I don't know what it is with that bullet, but yeah it's just dynamite. I still have 900+ of them. Makes me want to get a .308 load working with them again.

It was that 178 AMAX and 155 Scenar that got me to just stop using hunting bullets altogether.

This mirrors my journey almost exactly. I hunted with the .308 a bunch in my early years. Then moved onto several different rounds; bigger, faster, flatter. Sometimes smaller. When I got a. 300 win mag, I thought I would never hunt with anything else again. Then I noticed that it kicked harder, was louder and heavier, and didn't seem to kill anything deader than my .308. Went back to the. 308, and with all the new bullets out there, my .300 just sits at home.

I'm no amazing shot, my rifle is cheap and this was off my pack for both but I'm happy to have had a chance to play in the big wind with my 308

savage axis non accutrigger, burris 3-9, 168 amax, off the pack I generally hunt with laying in the snow. I feel like I could shoot a critter at this distance with any conditions based on performance

You can see my lack of experience with most of my hits still landing on the right side of center. Thats an 8 inch shoot and see, so I feel comfortable to try and extend my range in the wind more next time. All very much dead critters, but I'm always trying to improve

Anybody tried the core lokt tipped in 308? I was given a couple boxes to try. I moved away from the original core lokt but now that I'm revisiting the "softer"bullets I'm wondering how they would do accuracy wise and on game

I'm not a big gun guy. I have a ruger American predator 308 with the 16 inch barrel that is threaded. I'm in the process of gettin a suppressor and really wanna dial this gun in a lil more before deer season. Right now I'm shooting federal fusion factory 165 loads. They shoot fine enough to kill a deer but I'm sure I can do better. It will definitely be a sub 300 yard gun, more like sub 200 yards with most shots under 100 yards. What bullets do you guys recommend? I do have the ability to get reloads but no more than I shoot I'd be more apt to shoot factory ammo. I'd like something that penetrates well, that's got some knockdown power, but also can make decent blood trails because it can be thick here where I hunt.

The load you are shooting gives very good performance. On the other hand the 150 grain Speer Hotcor is hard to improve on.

I also have a 6.5CM. and I find speed kills. The .308 may be fatter, but the 6.5CM just knocks down big game. Vortex has a video 6.5 vs .308. It's on youtube. 6.5 kills better. I also hunted with a .270, and that just kills too. I believe it's about speed.

You should back off the 6.5 pipe. the 6.5 does not kill better, dead is dead. "It's on youtube"! Ha ha ha too funny.

100 yards with a very blistery cold wind with gusts up to 25 mph, but was hidden in the trees enough so I could shoot off my pack. Top group is amax 168, what the rifle is sited for. Bottom group is 150 core lokt tipped. Obviously the 150s hit high but I'm pretty shocked at how well they shoot and that they werent drastically off fro. The point of impact of the168s. The 168 amax is slightly cheaper if I grab more on sale but its nice to know if I ever run low the core lokt tipped might be a good option.

180 tipped fusion, 100 yards. I think I shanked that left shot, I was shooting off a bipod and I'm not sure I'm that good at shooting off a bipod yet. The 180 fusion tipped somehow recoils differently and doesn't seem to be as sharp as the 168 amax on the shoulder. Could be positional difference too.

This years lineup of hunting bullets I'd like to try. 180 tipped fusion, 175 terminal ascent, 168 amax, 165 trophy bonded, 150 core lokt, 150 nosler ballistic tip and a 150 ttsx. I know this gun shoots standard fusions great so I'll leave them for backup as I test what else might work well. So far leaning to 168 amax, 180 fusion or 150 core lokt tipped but I'm hoping someone has used the 180 fusion or core lokt on game. I'm a long ways out from season but I'm commited to my little old 308 so I'll be banging with it all year long until I'm the best shooter I can be. Its been really fricken fun learning to shoot a rifle better and learning about bullets, wind drift and all of it. And since 308 is easy on the shoulder and pocket book, I'm shooting more than I ever have

I'm just too indecisive to buy another caliber at the moment. I made the full lap from thinking I needed 300 win mag, 7mm mag, 7 prc, then I started shooting more and realized I don't have the skills to use those rifles to their potential

I'd throw the 130 TTSX in the mix also if your shots are 3-400 max

I like shooting and hunting with different cartridges, but if I was starting over, I’d have a precision bolt gun and gas gun in 223 for recreational and match shooting. And an 18”- 20” suppressed 308 to hunt with. 99.99 percent of the animals I’ve killed east and west have been inside of 400 yds. Only a couple that were beyond that were because I couldn’t get closer, the rest that I’ve killed beyond 400 were because I could. Inside of 400 the 308 is a hammer. Just plain works without any fuss. The older I get the more I appreciate that.
