All around 7mm bullet.

the 162 ELDX is very effective all around. There's at least 1 thread several pages long with real world examples of performance. It's extremely accurate & devastating when it's placed in the right spot. It liquifies vitals.
Generally speaking, on an elk you'll find the remnants of the jacket & a few grains of lead under the offside hide & you probably won't have much of a blood trail. Just don't hit the humerus

Only killed one elk with it, but the 162 ELDx worked 100% as designed for my daughter last fall. 180ish yard shot, put it in the crease quartering away, cow took a few steps and tipped over dead. Liquified heart and lungs and shattered off humerus bone. That was out of a 18" 7-08 and around 2600 MV. @Pharmseller has piled up a ton of deer and elk with the 150 ELDx in a 7-08. Either would work very well in your 7 mag.

We’ve killed a bunch of elk and deer with the ELDX, both 162 out of the 7mm Rem Mag and the 150 out of the 7mm-08. Nothing needed a second shot, distances from 100 yards to just over 400 yards. Meat loss similar to the AccuBond, slightly less than the Partition.

They are all I load these days. Just shy of 3000 fps for the mag, 2780 fps for the Mighty-08.

@Tom6263 check out the following link for success stories and photos with the 7-08 and various 7mm bullets. Pics from my daughter's hunt are in post #132. There may not be another caliber with so many excellent bullet offerings. With your 7 mag you have the luxury of running lighter bullets really fast as well as the heavies with good MV. Just need to pick some up and try them out in your rifle.

TLDR - I love the 175g Hornady ELDX in my 7PRC. The 162g ELDX in a 7mag would be a good place to START.

To be honest, at the ranges you specify any premium hunting bullet is going to work if you put it in the right spot.

My suggestion is to buy boxes of a number of different cartridges. Your rifle will tell you which ones it likes, and which ones doesn’t. You might be surprised that your rifle prefers cheap (but predictable) core-lokts vs. crazy expensive ammo.

I personally have found that across all my hunting rifles, the ELDX consistently gives high scores in accuracy, and have given great terminal performance for deer, caribou, black bear, moose, and brown bear.

DISCLAIMER:
As everyone knows, the 7mm-08 is only appropriate for women and children. If you’re a grown man, expect Daisy Red Ryder performance.
