I was in the same position several months ago I booked a sheep hunt aug 2018. and the wife wanted to see Alaska then the in laws wanted to come and my 2 kids as well. only I'm going july, august put a post up here got a lot of good info and put a plan together.booked king fishing trip, halibut trip, cabin on kenai peninsula due to in laws senior citizens coming otherwise I would tent.lot to see and do kenai peninsula.visited their in 1996 had a job interview didn't take it lifetime regret.finally saved enough money to do my #1 bucketlist 2016 Kodiak brown bear took a good bear.now headed back this summer.every time I go its for a longer time this time I'm driving up from the states taking 6 weeks I may lose my job but theirs always another.i suggest to put a plan together so you don't waste your time trying to decide what to do but whatever you do you will definately enjoy it .you can stop every 1/4 mile and take a picture.just don't rent the smallest car you can and go hunting or fishing because theirs not enough room to get yourself game and luggage in!!
good luck john

If your heart is set on going to Denali, then the timing of your trip should be great...chances of seeing the mountain are better as opposed to summer, the tundra will be turning red, the birch will be turning yellow, and the volume of tourists will be significantly decreased. Not sure when it closes-down there, but it does, so check that out.

If you don't want the typical tourist experience, you might want to drive from ANC to Valdez, camping a couple days along the way. In Valdez, you might be able to go out for the day fishing for silvers or not. You can then take the ferry from Valdez to Whittier through Prince William Sound, and have time to head south for a day or two before going back to ANC. You'll see more country and experience more Alaska than a trip to Denali.

Hope you have a great trip!

Best advice!!!

You don’t hear this much but for a nice day or over night trip go through Hatcher’s Pass. About an hr or so N of Anc and an absolutely beautiful drive!

I have no desire to try and do/see everything in one week. Honestly, we are going to pick out a few things and really enjoy them. Sounds like Kenai and Seward need to be at the top of list. So maybe a couple days for Denali and driving. Couple days in Kenai area, couple days in Seward and finish it off in Anchorage as we turn in our RV and wait for our late flight

This is doable, but you will be spending a ton of time behind the wheel with this itinerary. Kenai & Seward are south of Anchorage, Denali is north. You can get a great trip with Denali as the centerpiece by driving straight up to Denali ( 5-6 hours from Anchorage, maybe more with all the hunting traffic and end of construction season) and spend 2 or 3 nights around there. Better camping south of the Park, than north. Then head down to Talkeetna and take a flight seeing trip around The Mountain if the weather is good. A flight is NOT to be missed. Best way to see The Mountain if it’s clear, they’ll also land on a glacier near Base Camp for all the climbers.

Fish for silver salmon, rainbow trout, and grayling in the Talkeetna River. There are guided options, or try your luck walking the banks. Bring bear spray!

If you have another night, Hatcher Pass, as stated above, is nice. One of our favorite places to get out of the big city and spend a weekend hiking with the dog. Then back to ANC for the flight home. Save the Kenai Peninsula for the next trip when you can fish the many rivers, and pull big ol’ halibut in Homer.

Have a great trip.

X2 on the denali np thru the denali hwy to glennallen and on to Valdez. Denali hwy is a must that time of yr. Could side track a day to kennicott mine as well. Many pullouts along the way for the rv. Way better traffic and less stress. Anch to Seward/homer is pay to camp, always hate that.
