This high pricing of tags sure hasn't helped Id fish& game. I was at one of their meetings a few yrs. ago and listened to one of their top guy's tell how they were not over pricing non residents. Fast forward to today, want a non resident tag ??? lots of them here, so many that they sell them to us residents at a discount to use for a second elk or deer tag. Correct me if I'm wrong but in the business world if you want to increase your sales, you either lower your price or have sales. In the gov. business world if you want to increase sales, you raise prices, good business practice. lol.

doubling prices of tags is not out of line at all. $800 for an otc moose tag is still cheap!!! Ive paid $650 for a Colorado otc elk tag gor the last 10 years and had tag soup on more than half of them. Don't get me wrong, its not like I jumped for joy to see that im gonna have to pay 2x as much now, but i get it.

That being said, im still interested in trying to get 1 more trip in for the 2016 price. Any new info on if we can buy 2017 tags before they raise the prices?

I understand the need but the tag cost for guys in the lower 48 to hunt in Alaska will be the least expensive item of the trip(most likely). for NR elk tags that's the biggest expense to L48 guys.

It's pretty easy for a guy to budget for 700-1k for an out of state hunt every year of every other. 3k is a completely different story.

I'd be interested in how this changes not only NR tag sales, (especially black bear) but all the other money spent by NR's inside Alaska. From float planes to fuel canisters.

They could have gotten away with doubling the price of some tags, but to double them all wasn't a good move and shows poor planning. They should have done smaller increases on the less glamorous and more diy species like caribou, sitka blacktail, and black bears. By doubling those tags, they really hurt those in business who cater to the DIY hunter.

Interesting. When was this posted or did it occur?

Was dated 11/1. I presume nor suggest anything, no clue if this was an isolated issue or what. But felt it good info to share. Perhaps it may effect others.

Yeah, I was just curious. I have checked a couple times but it always shows me the same "2017 Big Game Locking Tags are not available at this time" message.

Somehow I had missed this info. Thanks to Colonel00 for the heads up, he saved me and my three hunting buddies a chunk of cash on our 2017 caribou drop in! Bought my license and tags today. Only 244 days until we fly out.

Yep, I picked up a tag today too. Just need to figure out the rest of the trip now.

You guys in the states are crazy double charging someone for living across an imaginary line. In aus its the same price for any aussie from any state, in fact the same for an international

But that would mean turning over all control of game to the Federal government, rather than state management. Which no one would want.

State constitution dictate the use of game as a "for profit" asset. It's just each state differs on the profit margin.

Alaska isn't double charging, rather the tag prices are now on an even keel with other states since an increase hasn't been seen in many years.

What really gets me is not being able to hunt Alaska diy for non Americans. I personally think it's rough that I need to pay $20k to shoot a moose or sheep or close on $10k for a bou which is another way of saying as an average person I'll never be able to hunt them.
In aus most of our hunting is as easy for non residents than Australians. In fact the only exception is hunting buff and banteng in NT which is reserved for those with deep pockets. I know of Americans and Europeans that have shot 4 or 5 buff yet for an Aussie without a lot of coin it's something that'll never happen.
