Advantages or dis Advantages for a 4mm arrow

I shot 4mm for many years back when they were giving me arrows. They were always a PITA. I have shot them all and have no dog in this fight.

I would question any study that claims a 10% advantage. Thats hogwash. As @Billy Goat mentioned, fletch and BH's have more of an aerodynamic effect than the shaft itself. It's much like the guys that claim 4mm shafts penetrate better from some backyard test- more hogwash.

if you regularly shoot animals at very long shots like 80yds+, then you might be able to justify 4mm. I get the feeling many choose these 4mm shafts partially for that purpose. <face palm>

Most of what we see with the purported advantages of different items on the forum sites is Confirmation Bias, "My choice is best"

It happens with BH's, Bows, arrows, Rests, Sights, everything

I love 4mm, they fly awesome, I’ve never shot better groups than with Easton A/C 4mm arrows. I shot A/C injexions for a while and now Pro Comps. I’ve also done regular injexions and VAP.

I prefer them to 5mm, I also shot RIP TKOs and Axis for a while. They never shot as well for me as 4mm at long distances. I will take accuracy over anything and 4mm give me confidence.

I moved away from 4mm for a few years once everyone quit making D6 heads. Now that there are glue in options I’m all in on 4mm.

I also shoot ez vanes from Aus. I can build an arrow in about 5 min and be shooting and have some of the most accurate arrows there are. I also shoot less stiff arrows than most for my draw weight because they are more accurate for me. I’ve experimented a bunch and this is where I’ve ended up. I would move away from 4mm again and feel like they do give me an accuracy advantage over other arrows.

I’m one of the guys Bruce is face palming and I’m OK with that. :)

The raw data I'm seeing they have is all with 5mm shafts, testing broadheads and fletching.

They say 4mm had 10% less drag coefficient, but I'm not seeing data supporting once testing broadheads. Maybe I'm missing it.

There's a fair advantage on arrow diameter in the wind with small vanes and a broadhead. I think once you have a .45" or taller fletch and even most any of the mechanical heads available, the difference in wind drift is almost moot.

Don't know Mr. Yates and have no dog in the fight.

I would recommend reading over the data AND watching the youtube video where he discusses the data.

Ah damn, YouTube?? I don't have the laughs face things in my phone, but picture them.

I read through what I could in the sections labeled Data, I like raw numbers or something like that. I saw where they claimed 10%, but couldn't find anywhere of how they tested that. Majority of the testing was with an Axis 5mm from what I could tell, for broadheads, Vanes, etc.

I'm not meaning to down the study at all, just was trying to find the details of when the 10% in wind drift was gained.

My reasoning was tougher shafts per weight, smaller diameter means thicker walls for the same weight, and that is true, but it’s not worth it, and I ended up over investing on them instead of cutting my losses when I decided it was just like the last time I shot 4mm😂 and each one wears a 10$ insert now… smh

It seems like 166 lighted nocks all suck too, another waste of money trying different ones and finally saying screw it and just getting some white bohning nocks

Not like I didn’t know better, I have been down this road before and came out feeling the exact same. I will still make use of them, but I’m not spending another dollar on them
