I shot 4mm for many years back when they were giving me arrows. They were always a PITA. I have shot them all and have no dog in this fight.
I would question any study that claims a 10% advantage. Thats hogwash. As @Billy Goat mentioned, fletch and BH's have more of an aerodynamic effect than the shaft itself. It's much like the guys that claim 4mm shafts penetrate better from some backyard test- more hogwash.
if you regularly shoot animals at very long shots like 80yds+, then you might be able to justify 4mm. I get the feeling many choose these 4mm shafts partially for that purpose. <face palm>
