A loss in the feral horse battle

I haven't spent much time on the SW Desert in a few years. The last time I was out there a few seasons ago we saw many times more horses than elk. Many of the horse herds were in places you didn't see them a few years prior. Its getting worse. Ill be out there this winter chasing elk again. I am wondering how it is now and expecting to be disappointed.

Lots of areas still have the horses and lots of other areas have burro's and quite few have both. Some of the burro herds have gotten huge in places as have the horses. If we are ever allowed to hunt them it's going to be a war zone for a bit

This is a really easy solution… Federal government decreases the penalty to zero dollars, zero criminal charges…

Much like suppressors. Carve out the groups that an actually have significant mustang blood if we even care about that.

The French eat horse. I'd give it a try. At worst it would be dog approved food

I think I remember that the US ate horse meat during the second world war.

I was available here in S AZ during the 70's. I recall many families ate it. I remember once asking why and a friends dad said it was cheap. We didn't eat it but it was around. I had it here and there from being around the ones that ate it. We had a horse processing plant on our side of town as well. It was shut down sometime in the mid 70's if I recall correctly.

The stories from the old timers were wild . It was the nail in the coffin for mainstream
Working stock. Horse ranches were cleaned out for gi rations .
Now they get loaded on a truck and sent to Canada for dog food . It’s a shame

I worked closely with a local forest district when I was in oil and gas. The foresters (rangers) despised the feral horses. A stud will chase off the natural wildlife deer and elk) from water sources.

One forest employee referred to them as weeds and should be treated as such.

If you ever talk to an NDOW biologist ask them what they think of the horses.
