I have older filson waxed shelter and tin cloth they are very durable waterproof coats, but with thorough waxing breathability goes down. I don’t re-wax unless I need to.

An alternative is diy, 50/50 mix of linseed oils and mineral spririts. Will waterproof unwaxed cotton jackets just like a tent.

Have some grace with me here as I’m trying to unlearn my brain haha. Are folks wearing a waxed canvas jacket for thier primary shell/ rain jacket for hunting ? I understand how synthetics and gore Tex breaks down now.. so for those of you that are running canvas jackets for hunting can you lay out your layering system for me?

I was wondering the same thing. Form I recall from somewhere you really liked the waxed pants but I thought you still had a nylon rain suit in your gear. If a waxed jacket doesn't totally replace Goretex I was wondering about a waxed jacket plus a totally waterproof jacket for the really cold rain days.

The Tom Beckbe jackets are really nice and can be found on sale from time to time. Quality is very good and the waxed canvas feels heavy duty. Made in USA.

I've got a 25 year-oldish Filson -- I use a (size down) fleece coat inside of it when cold -- It is almost like new -- no wind gets through that thing! It sheds water, its an awesome coat -- now heavy as all get out when I zip in that fleece coat, but well worth the warmth. I didn't do the vest thing, my arms get cold too.

Interesting. I used waxed canvas pants to bird hunt in for many years. This was a couple decades ago so not sure whats changed, but I grew to hate waxed canvas. Its heavy, its either a sweat-bag to make it waterproof, or its breatheable but it soaks up water and becomes even heavier without keeping you dry, and I found all the creases would wear the wax off very fast and both wear out as well as leak really quickly. I was bird hunting a lot and was wearing out a pair of tin cloth pants every season AFTER patching them multiple times, rewaxing, etc. i actually gave my last old pair to a guy from this site in casper wyoming because I’ll never wear another pair. I never owned a jacket made of it, but at this point, I have zero desire to try. Even crawling in mud and dirt I’ve had better luck and far better comfort with more modern options.

I have some filson from the 90's that is what I hunt with when it sucks bad. It's heavy, hot and stinks but I feel like I could fight off a skip tooth chain in the double tins. I absolutely love single tin chaps with cheap wrangler synthetic pants for birds. I stay dry and comfortable plus they keep getting better with age.

My field jacket with the zippered map pocket in the back is too hot for most days, but when it sucks out....it makes it not suck.
