It's been a long time since I've made them, but I drilled out the horns then fit the spout plugs. I will scrape the extreme rough parts off, then polish the natural smooth section. I've done 100% polish before, but it just takes away too much of the natural beauty of the buffalo horn.

Using pine for the base plugs.

That’s cool. Looks like a fun project for sure. Are they from Buffalo you harvested? I know nothing about Buffalo, but do the horns come off similar to how antelope antlers/horns come off?

I bought these years ago at rendezvous. They come off like cow horns which is nasty process itself.

Just curious, how would you measure volumes traditionally? I know brass measuring tubes have been around for awhile but was there an earlier/original method?

In the early years, the gunsmith that built/sold the gun provided the ball mold, powder measure. The calibers were not standard size as they are today.

How's that horn of yours coming along? I did a couple of buffalo horns myself over the years. Like you say a fun project, always enjoyed scrapping them down to see what the reveal. Messed up one did not have the angle just right drilling the spout. I used horns from buffs that I shot. This one is one from a cow, (shot with my flintlock) its about 20 years old and seen lots of hard trail use. Plain & simple working trapper's horn.

I've done some work on buffalo horn. These are all coyote howlers I built for some buddies. I've seen some really nice ones other builders have made. I tried my hand at scrimshaw but not the best artist. They are fun to make though.
