It's been a long time since I've made them, but I drilled out the horns then fit the spout plugs. I will scrape the extreme rough parts off, then polish the natural smooth section. I've done 100% polish before, but it just takes away too much of the natural beauty of the buffalo horn.

Using pine for the base plugs.

That’s cool. Looks like a fun project for sure. Are they from Buffalo you harvested? I know nothing about Buffalo, but do the horns come off similar to how antelope antlers/horns come off?

I bought these years ago at rendezvous. They come off like cow horns which is nasty process itself.

Just curious, how would you measure volumes traditionally? I know brass measuring tubes have been around for awhile but was there an earlier/original method?
