Looking for opinions on magnification. I do a lot of hunting and looking to upgrade my vortex diamandbacks. I have the kowa tsn 553 that is in my pack at all times during hunting season, also I do quite a bit of close range hunting on archery elk and muleys. Just wondering about added power vs added field of view. Maybe theres people here that have both.? Let's hear your opinions...

This thread is pretty recent and should be helpful for you

I used 10x42 binos for a long time, I thought they were where it’s at and they are but I recently grabbed a pair of Zeiss conquest 8x42s and I’m having a rough time deciding.

There was another thread recently discussing this and my personal takeaway was that it makes sense to have a quality pair of 8x42s, this is the route I’m going.

Solidly in the 10 power camp here. In my past life, when I was getting by with a less quality glass, I found lower power to fit my needs better but once I started using high end glass, I became a true believer in 10 power glass.

Hunting and guiding in the West, I found the 10's perfect and figured that when I was hunting in the thickets of the East, I'd have to resort to a lower magnification but I found that the high end glass really shines for me in both the wide open spaces as well as in the close, dark thickets.

7's or 8's for still hunting in timber. 10's for dropping down on your keister and looking over a canyon a mile out. They might have to last you 20 years so consider where you'll likely be living and hunting in the future.

If you are only going to have one pair and hunt out west, then 10x. I currently run 8x and a small spotter.

I had 8x in EL range. Could see a lot of things about the same with my naked eye. Went to 10 and 12.
