Picked up a NEW Tikka 6.5 PRC T3X & swapped the stock with a MDT hnt26. I plan on swapping the barrel to a Proof tikka PreFIt... With this being said should I stick with 6.5 prc or get a 7 prc barrel? Mostly hunting whitetail with plans on Elk out west & possible hunting Alaska in the next few years for caribou/dall sheep. Should I go 7prc or stick with 6.5 prc. Shots will be under 500 yards for sure.... Also will be shooting suppressed.

I'd keep the 6.5 prc and look at another caliber if necessary later. I have seen hard evidence Tikka is gonna produce a 7prc very soon. I wouldn't go through the expense of another barrel. There are only a few circumstances where you would gain anything going to a 7prc.

The only thing you will gain sub 500 yards with a 7mm PRC is recoil. The only benefit is past 800 yards and really past 1k is where it is useful to have the 7mm PRC. Both of my 6.5 PRC rifles can be pushed to 1800 past 900 yards with the 147 ELDM and the 156 Berger.

Both will kill any of those animals at that range. I personally like the 7 because I like heavier bullets

I have a proof carbon 7PRC Tikka and a Sako S20 6.5PRC. I love shooting the slightly heavy Sako. I'll basically never shoot the 7PRC unless I draw a once in a lifetime type tag for big game.

Keep the 6.5 PRC as is and shoot the barrel out. If you're itching to jazz it up have LRI flute the barrel and bolt. Get a proof blank for the next barrel once you realize what you want out of the caliber (custom throat, length, etc.)

Glad I asked. Been struggling with why go to 7prc. This just confirms my thoughts. All your replies are great thank you.

Just for info, I have a rifle with the proof carbon fiber barrel in 6.5 prc. 24" it's averaging 2920 qith factory hornaday 143x. It's my wife's gun, recoil is light, accuracy is really good. It's been shooting sub MOA since it came out of the box and only has ~40 rounds through it.

Unless you like recoil. Stay with 6.5 PRC. My friend has been disappointed in factory loads In the 7PRC not not meeting box speed. At 500yd 6.5 PRC will do for elk.

They already have the 7PRC in the new T3X Ace Game on the Sako website

I’d stay with 6.5 as well and keep the barrel. Tikka barrels are solid and the profile on yours is a good balance of weight and thickness (with the flutes).

If anything cut it to 20.5” or so (just outside the flutes) and run it like that.

Keep it 6.5 PRC and shoot the barrel out first. You’re likely going to see it’s plenty accurate.

I say go 7prc for sure. Recoil is not excessive and very manageable with a break or suppressor. My buddy has a 6.5prc and is just waiting on the finds to size up to the 7.

We've found the 6.5 does anything our older 7s did. If I had an untested factory 6.5 PRC I'd be shooting it before doing anything.
