7 prc is the sacred saint of guys who need others advise to pick out a rifle.

Leupold is going to break your heart.

650 yards is easily doable with a 16" 6 Creed or an 18" 6.5 Creed. Plus you can build those in a lighter rifle that is still shootable.

Check out the winter shoot2 hunt reviews for info on Remington style action performance.

I’d swap out the leupolds for something more dependable and FFP. Everything else will kill an elk at 650 yards

I’ve been running leupold on the front of my quad for years, getting bumped around and abused and haven’t had an issue yet…. I guess just familiar and comfortable with them. My son loves his nightforce and no issues with same mode of transport.

If you want Leupold I’d go with a Mark 4 then, so you can have a FFP reticle and make proper wind holds.

to replace the leupold above-
nf nx8 f1 4-32x50?
650-850 yrd shot
Cross canyon shot for me means windy shot. So making an accurate wind call and accurate wind hold is paramount in my process. FFP makes that easier for me.
As for the nx8. It’s a very good scope for what you are building it to do.

Can you give us a little background on your shooting experience?
Maybe walk us through your shot process for a cross canyon shot?

@Fr8dog - You have been doing a lot of "running"...

"Running" a quad
"Running" a 7mm rem mag
"Running" a leupold

Do you actually run? For exercise?

How is the unit number important or applicable?

The current and proposed setups both sound like a NASCAR driver listing off their sponsors.

A 22 foot or a 26 foot barrel will be a bit much to carry, but if you want to lug one around, have at it.

As mentioned by others, Leupold is not the choice of many.

With so much into your hunt, good questions to ask now versus later. February > August.

Welcome to the forum. Good luck this season!

Unit4- that John Denver guy is full of shit. I thought the Rocky Mountains would be a little rockier than this
Running-Run forest run… I just felt like runninggg
NASCAR- Shake n bake
Feet- some are longer than others

It takes ten minutes in Unit 4 to find a place where the brush is sparse enough to take a dump, I’d build out the shortest barrel where I can still maintain 1800 fps at the distance you want to shoot.

There’s nothing wrong with a 7mm mag, there’s probably better beltless options now, but a 7mm mag (head spacing off the shoulder) is fine. If that Sendero barrel shoots well (some were great), I’d chop it down to 19 inches & use a titanium suppressor. Should get the weight down to a more manageable number.

Leupolds have a reputation for losing zero. There are much better options that track and hold zero… especially on the nasty, rock base roads up here. Nightforce & SWFA have been very reliable for me.

I like to build my fun gun (223 or 6arc) with an 18” barrel. Works well with suppressor. Make sure the twist rate is fast enough to run 80 gr 223 or 108 gr 6mm.

Competitive trap shooter from early teen years. Very limited rifle shooting but how hard can it be….ignorance is bliss .
Five years ago neighbor convinced me to come elk hunting. Bought a Remington sederno 7mm rem off the shelf. Day two of first elk hunt got lucky with a 224 yard shot on a nice bull. Hooked ever since. Thought this wasn’t so hard ( except for the pack out) Then two years of hard hunting, weather, etc… putting in the time realizing this is actually extremely hard. Soaking up as much info as possible to become a better hunter. Year three hunting partner and I ( his shot ) had a successful 428 yard shoot. Year four both of us missed shots 475 yards and 540 yards. Still no real shot process. Moving into year five a lot of range time. Prone/sitting/kneeling/standing with and without tripod. Trying to become more efficient and timely from pulling off the pack to shot. Year five found the herd and played cat and mouse. They would only open themselves up to a minute or two of light for a cross canyon 646 ish yds shot. My process or lack there of was not there to get setup fast enough and take a shot. Year four started to really realize that just cause you can hit those distances at range in controlled Enviorment doesn’t mean you have that shot out in the field…. Currently trying to develop a shot process from the university of you tube/range. Trying to decipher good and bad technique. What is good technique and process??? I am trying to get enrolled in a mnt course in Montana that people speak highly of this spring.

Good for you man.
If you don’t mind me saying so, you don’t need another elk rifle. You need a volume rifle, some instruction, and just a little bit of quality coaching. Sounds like you’ve already identified a course you want to take.

Lots of ways to get the proficiency you desire.
This post above will get you primed on thought process, technique, and some gear too.

In the strongest way possible, I would recommend looking into NRL Hunter. Building something in the 6.5 creed size, and then making it an extension of you will inform so many good decisions down the road. The NRL scene will further expose you to good resources for building your skill set. It will also give you a reason to keep pouring yourself into the sport after you’ve “mastered” the basics. Knowing your competitive background, I think it would be a match made in heaven.

Peeling the union
Much respect to the cliff greys and shoot to hunt boys getting us newbies fired up and into the sport/lifestyle.
Thank you for the imput.

Shawn Carlock @ Defensive Edge in Rathdrum puts on some great classes in the summer. He is definitely an expert on cross canyon shooting up here. His classes are done in the back country in Unit 4 so it would definitely be applicable.

I’ve never been to one of his classes, but I’ve heard great things about the classes & I have a ton of respect for him as an individual & as a gun builder.
